I want to get a good metal sound, think in terms of old school metallica, megadeth now, lamb of god now.
i have an epiphone les paul standard, and a fender g dec jr amp.

I want to get some gear that will give me a real good metal tone, without going out and getting a $1000+ head.

so any suggestions for a rig that I can put my les paul through without breaking $1000?
i have gotten some very different opinions from different pedals and amps.

by the way, I DO NOT WANT a spider3, or a really poor quality SS amp, as I already have one.

Thankyou!!!

There is a Randall RM50 combo with the Blackface and 1086 modules on Ebay for $700. Extremely versatile. Worth Checking out.

get a good OD pedal and a good EQ pedal and maybe swap out ur pickups for good actives. shouldnt be half as expensive as gettin a new amp, although it wont sound as genuine. it will sound decent though.

less than 1000 is my budget. therefore marshall heads are almost out of the question
#12
IMO, pick ups wont do anything without a good amp. You could take a Squier and play it through a Spider III, then put some EMG's or SD's on it, and it won't sound too much different.

I would suggest

B-52 AT 112
Carvin SX100
Bugera 6262 212
Bugera 333XL 212

All are within your less than 1000 dollar budget.

He said under 1000?? Seems like a budget to me. Anways id look into B-52, Bugera, and maybe some used marshall. There mainly B-52 and Bugera are the only high gain tube amps I can think of on a budget. A used Marshall + an od would work also. Your not gonna really reach a really good school thrash and modern metal tones like log in one amp at that range imo. Maybe a used 5150 could work.

+1 on the 5150. Maybe a used mesa. TS, your not gonna get anything amazing for under $1000 if you are only going new.

Carvin V3

and no need for a distortion pedal, you could get an Overdive pedal to tighten it up

mmhm. ok so you can get marshalls for cheap, but then i need a good cab, and that goes way over.
no one can come up with a really low budget idea?
#22
It wouldn't be WAY over. You might walk the line of you budget, or possibly break it, but i don't think it would be by much. Metallica uses Randall Amps (again, don't quote me on that) i believe. Maybe a Randall combo?

And alot of the modern rock bands like Nickelback and Theory of a deadman use mesa. So a mesa combo may be able to put out a similar tone too.

As i mentioned b4, there is a Randall RM50 combo with the Blackface and 1086 modules on ebay for $700. Randall has at least three Marshall based modules: JTM, SL+, and Plexi. That is only three out of 20, and that number will soon grow. and with the number of mods that can be done to it by the many different people around the world, you have a plethora of possibilities.

Good Luck.
