With a master volume amp like the JCM800, can you get power tube distortion if you max the master volume then control the gain with the preamp volume?

Or is there just no power tube distortion in an MV amp?

Oh there is, just at loud volumes or attenuated or re-amped I guess.

I think if you did what you said it would be Preamp distortion.

Not sure though.

right Metallica is a given. Personally I like to pretend the bus exploded and killed them all in '86.

If you use an attenuator than play with the preamp and master volumes on it to get the right tone and than make the volume desirable with an attenuator.

But even than I've heard attenuator can suck some tone.

If you've got the master volume maxed and the preamp gain low, the same amount of signal is going through the power tubes, so they're not really going to break up. You find find it changes the character of the tone a little (doing this trick on my old Mesa made it sound very compressed and mushy), but it won't saturate the tubes at all.
