I know ampeg is pretty popular, but I'm sort of ignorant on quality bass gear. I feel like this is a pretty good deal, can any of you more experienced bassist shed some light on it? Thanks!

just because it's Ampeg, i'd say go for it. And the price. Since it's on craigslist, why not try it out and see if you like it?

Hmm.. It sorta is a pretty good deal, but don't expect it to be like the classic ampeg. Ampeg is known for their tube SVT series and that is what considered the Ampeg sound. A lot of their solid-state stuff and newer things in general quality has gone downhill though.

IMO pretty bad advise except for the last part. Never buy something for the name.

Yeah, I guess after you pointed that out it made sense. I was always told Ampegs=awesome, so thanks.

You can easily get something that will sound better

Frequency Response (-3dB): 55Hz-18kHz

Remember the lowest fundamental of a 4 string bass is 40hz......

I used to use one of these at tafe, i hated the thing
Gear:
Washburn RB2500 (5 String)
Yamaha BB400 Fretless (1981)
Carlo Giordano 3/4 Upright (White)
Cort Action 4 (Stereo-fied)
Orange Bass Terror 500
Orange 1x15 Cab
Boss GT-6 Bass Multi-effects

My cab goes down to 30 hz, and hell I'd like lower.

And I agree he could get a better cab, especially if he's swimming in the used market.

^ my trace goes down to 20hz

EDIT: Just realised that my kustom KBA10 goes down to 55hz - it's a 10 watt practice amp

Wow guys, so I guess I have MUCH to learn about bass frequencies and all that. So the lower the frequency = deeper bass? If that's true, I'm all about reggae, so what would you suggest? Preferably something loooooooow

haha well reggae - my trace is beautiful for that, if you can find one i highly recommend it. I reckon your best bet is going to be something ported with a 15" speaker, but this depends on the reggae tone you want, old school like Marley or new school like Franti and all that. The new school is all about boosted lows, cut low mids and treble while old school is all about boosted lows and low mids. A good ported 15" should be able to do either

EDIT: just realised how bad the highs are on the ampegs - my trace's response is 20hz - 22khz without a horn
