So I have begun building my PRS style kit that I sold myself! lol I have it all mocked up accept for the volume and tone knobs on and the truss rod cover. I must say I am impressed by the quality of the package itself I mean I put this thing together and the neck joint was perfect no gaps at all and lined up great with no modification whatsoever. The tuners are ok I am going to replace them though and I will be repalcing the pickups also with some Torres Engineering Very vintage in the neck position and Torres overwound blues in the bridge position. The pickups that came with it are decent I am just looking for a little more than what they have to offer. The body has a very durable sanding sealer on it that I thought about stripping but upon further research IE Stewmac tech I am convinced that the translucent blue finish that I would like to obtain is very attainable by just sanding the sealer to make sure all is level and very smooth then mix up 2 oz. of blonde shellac flakes for two thin coats and a quick very light sand just to scuff then I will mix in some color tone stain by stewmac into some behlans nitrocellulose lacquer and give it two coats with the tinted lacquer then scuff lightly then i will be proceeding with five to eight coats of clear nitrocellulose lacquer sanding between every 2nd or 3rd coat. Upon completion of the clear I will then be wet sanding the guitar for the buffing process which will include thre different grits of compound. The top of the body will be translucent blue on the back and sides of the guitar will remain natural. The neck will be all natural in color with the rosewood fretboard being conditioned. I am amazed at how well this guitar plays right after just being mocked up! The action is at .005 on the high E string and not one buzz the neck was straight (still is) and I had about less than five minutes of intonation time. I was very reluctant to build this kit but I figured if I sold them I had better build one. I have heard stories around the net not to build this kit due to it being very low quality and hard to build and fit together. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! These are very nice kits! Accept for the few things I am going to change out for cosmetic reasons like just because I want it that way; these are very good guitars for the price! I will be cutting a design on the headstock I am not sure of the design as of yet. I will be posting pics later tonight when I can get access to the photos off of my girlfriends computer. I must say that this just may be my go to guitar when it is complete! As it is right now I dont want to take it apart to do the finish work...I JUST WANT TO PLAY IT!!! It plays like a dream. I am so glad that I decided to build this kit...It is definitely worth the time and money and it is very rewarding knowing that you built it and it plays like a dream! Pics to come soon! Peace, Shawn

There's something vaguely Rickenbacker-ish about the body shape, too. Kind of PRS by way of Ricky "sweptwing" or some such. Nice.

Any ideas yet on what you're gonna do with the headstock?

I am still trying to work up a design..Although I do have a template for the PRS headstock..Hmmmm maybe I dunno Only thing with using the template is the tuning holes are drilled straight and not offset like a PRS. So I couldn't get in any trouble with copying their design. lol I will keep trying different designs til I find one though will keep you posted! Peace, Shawn

Ok...I had some other stuff to do this week but I did get my finish supplies ordered up this morning should be here in a couple of days! So I am going to finally tear it down and start doing some final prep-sanding by hand and I will be posting pics as the different processes are taking place! Peace, Shawn

Well I got all of my finish supplies in from stewmac and they all were exactly as I had ordered. I have my shellac kit from Rockler now I just need some denatured alcohol to mix my shellac so I can put on two thin coats of blonde shellac and lightly sand them then I can progress to the color coat (transparent blue). I will be doing this on Sunday or Monday of this coming week. I have completely disassembled the guitar and getting ready for some level sanding on the massive coat of sealer that came on the guitar. Basicly just a quick level of the finish up through 320 grit and then the two shellac coats will commence. Pics to come at that stage. Peace, Shawn
