So i want to get started on learning scales and a better visualization of the fretboard and i was wondering if the CAGED system was a good way to start. Should i spend time memorizing these shapes so they can help me have a better understanding of the scales and notes on the fretboard?

yea that's what I did, and its really easy to. Learning guitar later on I see that every scale, every chord, every arpeggio, and the root shapes have 5 shapes. Start off with learning the chord shapes. First major then minor. Remember you can shift up and down the fretboard with a major shape and still have a major chord, makes guitar much easier.
