i currently own a ibanez RG 2ex2. i bought it with a dimarzio evo neck pick up and im looking to replace my emg stock bridge pick up. im looking for a pick up which would go well with the evo. i play a lot of Buckethead, and of course other stuff, mostly rock though.

Evolution or Evo 2?

???

Will need more details like amp, reference music/bands to make an informed decision.

Yes I know the evo is the neck pickup, but you only said you wanted a matching pickup without a reference artist (when I read it) and a amp, so I gave the natural choice, pair it with an evolution or evo 2 in the bridge.

Yes you need a better amp, but you don't need a stack. Do you want to emulate BH's tone exactly or is that a reference point?

what about like a flextone?

Try to avoid modelling amps. You already have a modelling amp, why get another. Try to get a tube amp if you want to hear difference with pup changes.

(Before anyone rips me again for assuming that I am implying that tube amps are the only ones where you can hear a change in pup change, I DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH HIGH END SOLID STATES)

Try to go for the Blackstar HT-5. Its probably the most metal low wattage stack on the market now.

OK, I'm gonna assume the regular aftermarkets and not boutique, because it'd be more difficult with most boutique makers due to the lack of collective experience on UG (and I can only recommend Bare Knuckles).

DiMarzio
Breed
Evo 2
Steve's Special
Tone Zone
FRED
Mo' Joe
PAF Pro

Seymour Duncan
Alternative 8
Custom Custom
Full Shred (Maybe)

Buckethead has a very unique tone... I think that these would probably be your best bet.

Its either these or the various PAF replicas by Seymour Duncan or DiMarzio.

There are a few modeling amps that are worth looking into.

Without knowing your total budget and genres you want to cover these are all worthy amps that were posted on craigslist.org within the last day or two and most all of these are highly flexible!

Go check them out man....

Your Vox is cool so don't get me wrong but I an amp like that will not be able to provide an noticable diff in tone for the money you may spend. I've been there done that.....So has Ragingkitty.

Plus one on Custom Custom - I own that. I'm really wanting a Alt 8 hard!

I need to bash on this a little.. Uh.. You can hear pickup changes in ANY, and I mean, ANY amp, be it a 5 watt starter amp from a Starcaster package. Trust me. I have one and a frontman.. Sounds change drastically with any modification. Better pickups improve tone whether the tone is still bad or not. People just say amp because it will still sound bad with a bad amp anyways. maybe you're tone deaf.. <3

Haha, thanks man, now I know I spend too much time on UG haha.

Unfortunately I'm still there... still have my Spider Valve. I think amoung the SD pups there... its either the Alt 8 or the Custom Custom, the Full Shred won't cut it for BH's more melodic or chordy songs.

I've not actually met anyone who has the Alt 8... but its description sounds good.

TS: You will notice that we recommend either going high end modelling to get BH's sound or get tubes and then pups to tweak the final tone. Both routes are fine in terms of getting good tweakable sound. However, if you go with high end modelling amps you obviously have the flexibility of moving from one end of the tonal spectrum to the other. With tubes you don't always have that option, but pup changes will be more evident on tube amps than they would be on modelling amp.

Of course you can hear tonal changes BUT

Is it obvious? No.
Is it worth it? No.
Does it give the full effect of a pickup change? No.

The difference in pup changes across low quality SS amps are less tonal changes and more along output, clarity, bass response and treble roll-off of the pups. The tonal difference was bare minimum. Changing pups when you have low end solid states doesn't give the full effect of the pup.

Or maybe I am tone deaf and should just stick to a fender frontman.

Even in high end amps the differences between pickups can be small...

I think this illustrates this better than anything else...

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=950856&content=music

You can certainly hear a difference between all the pickups, but some of them sound REALLY similar (they're, for the most part, A5 PAF winds with the exception of a few of them), and you can only really hear significant differences when played through the JTM45 and Fender Deluxe Reverb. The only one that sounds very noticeably different from the rest are the Duncan JB, WCR Iron Man, and ironically (to my ears at least) the BB pro which just doesn't sound all that good in comparison.

al112987 makes some good points too.

I posted those amps before i knew your budget was $200 TS. Personally, save up. Get a kick ass amp and figure tone quest after that .

PS: Pott (UG'r) has an Alt 8 (SH16 or whatever) and he loved it (from what I remember). Has the crunch and low end of the SH-11 but with added highs and without the buzz. PM him. Runs hot at like 16k+ I think. I still want one

PSS: Duncan is pretty cool about exchanging pups after the fact if you don't like what you buy. Word

Pickup changes are subtle and sometimes not very obvious immediately, which is why when you use low end amp, the changes are practically non-existent. Yes, there will be some changes, but the subtitles and nuances of the pickup will not come through.

Please don't tempt me, I've spent a bomb on my bare knuckles as it is... haha.

I missed that budget post too. At $200, you need to save more.

First get your amp. Then get your pickup.

Between the 2, the amp will give close to 80% of the tonal change, whereas the pickup will give the final 20%.

Don't get in a hurry to achieve BH's tone. You'll need fairly high gain and soothing cleans for something close to BH's tone, and that means you'll need a good amp. Personally, I'd recommend getting a Dual Rectifier and then installing either:
1. Breed
2. FRED
3. Tone Zone
4. PAF Pro
5. Custom Custom
6. Alternative 8 <- Somehow this gives me the feel of Buckethead I don't know why.

I wouldn't use the brootalz for BH, but the Dual Recto will have sufficient gain on tap for any BH song. Also for some reason, I keep thinking PAF replica when I think BH.

I think you can also look at the Marshall JCM or JVM. I think.

EDIT: O does SD does the pup swap too? I knew that DiMarzio did it, but was not sure if Seymour Duncan did it.

EDIT: Yeah I couldn't do the pup swap cuz I live in Malaysia... and only the States are covered for the pup swap.
