In short, it's starting the major scale from a different note.

The modes are as follows:

Ionian (Same as the major scale, but as a mode)
Dorian (Start from the 2nd note of the major scale- like the Aeolian, but with a major 6th)
Phygrian (3rd note; Aeolian with a flattened 2nd)
Lydian (4th; Ionian with an augmented 4th)
Mixolydian (5th; Ionian with a minor 7th- forms a dominant chord)
Aeolian (6th; same notes as natural minor scale)
Locrian (7th, bit of a weird one this. I never use it myself, 'coz it's damn hard to keep from drifting into resolving to another note)

To make a piece modal (as compared to major/minor + accidentals) you have to stick strictly to your mode's notes, and resolve to the mode's root (eg/ for D Dorian to be D Dorian as compared to, say, G mixolydian, or C Ionian, it's got to resolve to D).

Also, see this topic. Has a load of resources on modes in there.

A mode is basically just a major scale with a different tonal center. For instance, if you want to solo over an A dorian progression, you could use a G major scale. Or if you wanted to solo over G aeolian (natural minor) you could play E major. They both have the same notes but because of the tonal center of G aeolian, E major will sound minor when played over it.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.

Yea, really, modes are one continuing scale(major scale/ionian), but if you change the root note one note up, it becomes a different mode. So for example, if you start with ionian (major scale) in the E key, and instead make the root note up to F sharp, it turns into a Dorian scale, and so on(their are 7 modes). The modes are
Ionian
Dorian
Phrygian
Lydian
Mixolydian
Aeolian
Locrian

I remember the modes by "I Don't Play Like Mr. Anthony Loco" which is really stupid, but its the first sentence that makes sense that I could come up with to remember the modes.

I just learned about modes today so if I didn't explain something right sorry

^Um yeah, you didn't.

Like Freepower said nobody's explained them properly, and there's really no point trying to until the TS tells us what he already knows. Most likely the reason he doesn't "get" modes is because he hasn't yet learned all the stuff he'll need to be able to understand them.

Besides, we have a sticky for 'em.

ok heres a C scale

C D E F G A B C
a mode would be
D E F G A B C D
exact same scale, you just start and end on a different note, idk why people make that so complicated

EX. the aeolian mode (minor scale, 6th mode) of that c scale i just spelled out is

A B C D E F G A, easy right...dont let peolpe over complicate it for you with fancy words

^Again, that's bollocks.

People make modes complicated because they ARE relatively complicated.

Because we're waiting for you to answer this question....

It doesn't really work like either explanation given.

What theory do you know now and what are you comfortable with?

besides, there's little point in someone going to the bother of writing out a complete explanation of modes when it's all here
