Well, for your GENERIC metal guitars, those brands are up there.

I say use a Telecaster. Or maybe an SG (Yes, I know, Iommi uses one). Or, for that matter, a strat.
Current Gear:
LTD MH-400 with Gotoh GE1996T (EMG 85/60)
PRS SE Custom 24 (Suhr SSH+/SSV)
Ibanez RG3120 Prestige (Dimarzio Titans)
Squier Vintage Modified 70s Jazz V
Audient iD22 interface
Peavey Revalver 4, UAD Friedman BE100/DS40
Adam S3A monitors

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

without a pup swap, a telecaster is hardly a metal machine, even after, its really not built for speed.

I dunno, I've played some pretty heavy stuff.

But as you said, the pickups just aren't right. Sounds better with an HB in the bridge, IMO.

yeah, I make do with what i've got. Iron Maiden and Metallica stuff sounds fine when played on my hot rails in the bridge to a distortion to the valve jr. But still, the neck is very thick, and access to higher frets is a bit hard. I'm not knocking the tele at all, I adore mine, but recommending it as a metal guitar is not where I'd recommend it.
