What do you guys think of the Fender Frontman series? I'm interested in getting the FM100H head (http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2317000000) paired with the FM412SL cab (http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2317800000). I am a firm supporter in solid-state amps!!! I already know what you're thinking: !!! Well, everyone has their own tastes in amps, and for $500, I really can't complain! I'm mainly looking for a combo/stack that I can play pedals through. Would the Fender FM212R (http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2316500) work? Would it be loud enough, or should I just go for the stack? Thanks guys.

P.S. Yeah, yeah...tube amps are the best...I know...

Well...If you are really into having a solid state half stack, maybe a vox VT half stack (If they have that) equivalent to the one you posted?

Its not a bad amp at all, I've never tried a peavey vyper, but its probably worth trying out

You don't need a half stack, I'm gonna confidently guess that. Half stacks are very over-rated. Don't go Fender FM, I have the 100w combo and it's too loud for bedroom use and too crappy for proper gigging, sonic death to the ears. Go a roland cube IMO, or a vyper/ vyper tube maybe (I hear really good things).

What do you play? Can you go used? What size gigs are you playing?

Without this information, I can't dignify you with anything but a stupid answer.

I've heard good things about the Blackheart mini-stacks.

For teh br00talz, gets teh pedals.

+1.

My moms boyfriend has one of these and they suck major balls. I had the 212 and it sucked major balls. The halfstack isn't loud enough and sounds like a bigger version of the 212 which sounds like a bigger version of the practice amp sized ones.

$500 should get you a decent amp on the used market. Check there first.

As an owner of a member of the Frontman series, they're awful. I'm fairly sure you don't need something as big or loud as a 100W halfstack too based on the rest of your gear too, and overshooting your volume limits =/= a good idea.

Now then, I'd recommend one of these;

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Blackstar-HT-Series-HT5C-5W-1x10-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=483559

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Vox-AC4TV-4W-1x10-Tube-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=476326

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Champion-600-5-Watt-1x6-Combo-Amp?sku=485054

The Blackstar will be the most versatile, but both since it's on sale and because I like US-voiced amps I like the Fender. Along with that, while not necessary, I'd recommend one of these to tighten up the sound, act as a boost and get an overdriven sound at low volumes;

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-TS9-Tube-Screamer-Effects-Pedal-Original-Reissue?sku=150284

And one of these if you pick one of the latter two so that you still have an EQ;

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXR-M109-6Band-Graphic-EQ?sku=151103

5W may not seem like a lot, but 5W tube is much louder than 5W SS, an at 3 on the master volume and 4 on the preamp my Blues Jr. can keep up with a full-and-loud-about-it band at practice and small gigs, 5W will do excellently for home recording and practice.

Neocrissis - none of those make the cut for a hard rock/thrash metal band. I already knew about the Tubescreamer.....but the EQ looks nice...and by the way - I'm in a band. Soooo....has to be loud.

I have a Randall rx50d, and have played through one of those Randall half-stacks. Let me tell you, they are plenty loud, fairly inexpensive and over all pretty nice. The reason I got the D version is because it has effects built in. These effects can really improve the tone of the clean channel if done properly. I think the overdrive is a little weak at a lower, blues kind of level but cranked up it can provide some decent metal tones. I don't use any pedals at the moment but if you had some you could probably dial in some good sounds with the Randall.

The biggest suggestion I can give is have good pickups in your guitar. Solid state amps I've played on seem to rely on the guitar more than tube amps.

I love CL hunting as well.

There is a Flextone II HD head on there with floorboard for $300. I see others with just the head going for $150 so I would negotiate the prices

http://detroit.craigslist.org/msg/1238542623.html

Peavey XXL - Never tried the amp but it's transtube so SS like you want it. Comes with Crate Cab with Celestion G12T-100's

http://detroit.craigslist.org/msg/1268916119.html

You can look at the Line 6 and search up cabs with the rest of the money you have left over.

TS -

I would definitely go try that XXL and crate cab out. If you don't like it, just tell them so and walk out. It's 550 obo so make it $500 which was your budget. Or try to coordinate the Line 6 head and one of the cabs so you don't get stuck with just one of them.
