So this is my first time experimenting with this kind of thing and I'm looking for some help/advice.

I have:
Peavey 6505 2x12
Podxt live
Guitar

I obviously don't need the pod's distortion, so I'm looking only to use it for its effects. I was told that the best place to put it is through the effects loop. Exactly how would the cable set-up for that look like?

My impression is that the guitar goes straight into the amp; the pod's output goes into the amp's "effect send"; the pod's input goes into "effects return"
I'm a stupid jackass.

yep ur right
its guitar--->amp
then send--->input pod
output pod--->return

Thank you.

Also, is my only option for recording with a 6505 to have a mic, or can I run it directly into a recording interface somehow?

You could get a di box and do it that way. Look up what a DI box is. If it doesn't have a cab simulator you'll probably want one

You could also send the preamp out straight into some, but that'll probably sound like sh!t

You'll get better responses in the recording forum.
I don't give a shit if you listen to me or not
