My 500 GB external hard drive was knocked off of a table by my stupid ass friend, and now it clicks when it is connected to my computer, and I can't access it. I don't want to lose the 200 GB of data that is on it, so any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

I had a friend that did that to his laptop. His hard drive did the same thing as yours, and it was declared dead on impact. So good luck with that. You'll have to kill your friend now.

u can find someone who uses linux and try a "force mount" (insert rape joke here), idk how/if u can do that in windows. if that doesnt work u will need a professional to put the actual magnet discs into another body, which can be costly, but theres a chance u wont loose ur stuff.

and i do mean, professional. it requires a static free environment with sterile tools.

What's a force mount?

And if I get it fixed by a professional, how much might it run me?

well from what your saying sounds like your read/write heads crashed into the disk. which equals boneage of the harddrive. you might be able to get some of that data back from a professional data recovery but that is expensive.

to be honest im not sure how much it would cost. i would ask at like a staples or something, they do that.

force mount is a command line.......command used in linux when the OS doesnt wana read the drive due to something going wrong last time it was plugged in, or whatever, and basically says stop worrying about precautions and settings just read the disc already! like i said, idk how or if this can be done in windows.

yea, if i had to guess, at staples or something it would be at least $100-200. it depends on how much that data is worth to u.

I don't know how to execute a force mount, but you can download Ubuntu (a variation of Linux) for free, boot from the CD you burn Ubuntu onto, then force mount from there. If that ends up not working, then kill your friend and start spending cash, cause theres no reason not to try something free first.

type into command line after booting with ubuntu live cd:

mount -t ntfs-3g/dev/sda1/media/_____ -o force

after media, type in the name of ur harddrive (if u named it). if u didnt, try Disk or maybe nothing.

edit: if u plug it in linux and it cant read it because of an error, most of the time it gives u the exact command to copy and past into command line (click Ubuntu logo top left, accessories, Terminal), and u have to right click->past, ctrl+v doesnt work in terminal.

it cant hurt, u just gotta download the iso, burn it, boot it, and type in a command line. to be honest it probably wont work, but its worth a shot right? and before u buy a new drive, at least take it a staples and they will give u an estimate i think, also cant hurt.

Your lucky day ts...there is an amazing german program called pc inspector file recovery. my external drive screwed up twice, once last week. i got 70% of the data aka porn back.

I got quotes from data recovery companies wanting $400 to get it fixed.
