So how does it work exactly? Can I just buy a 1/4" to 3.5mm plug converter, connect my guitar to the PC like this?:

guitar>guitar cable>converter>PC mic input>PC speaker output

all help is appreciated

You can... but it will sound like crap.

You need a USB or Firewire interface.

you should get an interface.. you can get a single input one cheaply for probably under 100 dollars.. it's the preamp that you need to boost the guitar signal before going into the computer
