Okay, first pit thread ever, a little nervous here.

I'm an easy going guy, I'm all for seeing other peoples point of view, usually very reasonable, and will respect any opinion backed up with reasons.

I'm having an argument with a girl right now, we were talking about meaningful songs, and I said that I think the most meaningful/emotional song ever would be Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton. Probably not something everyone would agree with, but just about anyone on this forum has heard it and knows that it's pretty significant.

She then replies with 'I don't listen to that shit-on-a-sidewalk', then tells me that Stick Stickly by Attack Attack is the most emotional song ever. Then tells me that she's never heard Tears In Heaven and doesn't want to when I tell her that she should listen to both before judging, then asking me who Eric Clapton even is, then tells me that if there isn't screaming then it isn't music, and that she only listens to hardcore music and isn't going to waste her time on 'crap like Eric Clapton'.

Now, there's opinions, and there's stupidity. Comparing Attack Attack to Eric Clapton is insulting to Clapton. It's like comparing a Spider 3 to a Diezel or a Splawn. Conversations like this make me want to go to the local shows where all the 'hardcore' and 'scene' kids hang out and kill them all.

Opinions on what I should do now?

Kill her.

Seriously, though. I'm all for musical objectivity...but come on...

what the hell is wrong with you? are you TRYING not to get laid?

Don't try to argue with people who make assumptions without knowing what they're talking about.

Edit: I'm not saying that she should have a certain opinion about music, I'm saying that arguing with a person who is arguing that something he/she has never listened to is crap is a waste of time.

The chick is stupid, but music is all opinion.

Just so happens that hers is wrong.

I'm sure if you ask her who the best musician is she'll say Pete Wentz right?
#12
what you should do now is never talk to her again. Anyone with such little taste in music is not worth talking to.

And also, one does not get laid by agreeing with every ridiculous thing a woman says.

So what if she only likes music that has screaming. She can like what she wants. Lots of people find timid music boring.
#16
Yeah, but I'm moreso incensed that she was saying that without having heard the song she was bashing. She's entitled to think Attack Attack is better than Clapton if she wants, but she hasn't heard him, and just says his music sucks without listening.

And the rest is basically frustration stemming from that. I'm not an elitist by any means, but I struggle to figure out how someone can rationalise that a song by a band which specialises in teenage angst could be more meaningful than a song written about the artists son dying.

Oh, and she told me her favourite bands are:
Adam Kills Eve
Attack Attack!
Born Of Osiris
MyChildrenMyBride

In case anyone wants to know. I've only heard Attack Attack out of them, I like one song by them, that's about it.

your friend is a ****ing moron. you don't need the pit to tell you that. next time she says some stupid **** like that, slap her across the face, push her down, and FORCE her to fold the shirt that you're wearing.
#18
lol
you guys should totally A/B the song and then have a meaningful conversation....

or alternatively you could learn hypnosis and change her opinion

EDIT: and by meaningful i mean like rub it in her face about how you were right
i have a modest rig which consists of guitar related stuff

tell her what tears in heaven really means, both to clapton (death of his son) and to you (if you have a special reason to like it, eg, loss of a family member).

then ask her what stick stickly means.

i mean, i quite like attack attack, but as far as i can tell, that song has pretty much no real story to it. if she can figure one out by herself, give her an e-cookie and just not talk to her.

Yeah, I don't mind Attack Attack either, and I explained all that to her. And I asked her for a reason as to why she thinks Stick Stickly is so meaningful and all she said was 'Read the lyrics, omg'. (direct quote)
#27
She's right.

If she thinks they're better than they are better to her. It's her opinion and HER taste in music. Not yours. Don't get your panties in a bunch. The fact that you are arguing with a girl over music instead of trying to tap that brings up questions as well.

I think Attack Attack is better than Eric Clapton too.
#28
Ugh, she sounds absolutely uninteresting. While the lyrics to Stick Stickly are actually pretty good, the instrumental part of the song is simple, uninspired, and boringly easy and non-emotional. Tears in Heaven not only has very good lyrics the guitar part is amazing. It shows so much emotion! It tells a story in and of itself. Attack Attack isn't really that bad, good even. But for someone to only stick to one type of music, doesn't REALLY like music. It's pretty shallow to only follow one type of music. It's sad. Those types of people depress me.

no, he's just not a sell out and wants people to like him as he is

to answer TS' question: your right, clapton is better and has been one of the most influential guitarists in history

You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live,
You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live.

WOOOOOO!

This is the best part of the message,
And it only took one.

We live for what He's worth,
And that's more than you'll know.
He died for what He loved,
And what he loved was you.

I'll wait for you,
You know I'll wait for you,
I'll wait for you,
You know I'll wait for you.

You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live,
You never said that this would be easy,
So go on live.

Bow your head,
Go on live.

This is the time to let yourself go,
Lord pick me off the ground,
You never said this would be simple,
So pull me in and turn around.

I'm being completely honest, this sounds like a stupid love song with a few Christian overtones. Clapton is poetry.
has a terrible signature.

This.

Doesn't matter how wild her opinion maybe - it's hers. And nothing can change that.

If you don't like her opinion - either get over it, or get away from her.
