The last British serviceman to fight in the trenches. Just over a week after the death of Henry Allingham.

Patch! First Allingham, now Patch, within such a short space of time.

I've read his autobiography, absolutely fascinating, a true hero. R.I.P.

forget harry fecking potter, this guy was a hero.

One of the best quotes ever came from this guy:
"I attribute my long life and longevity to a cigar and a glass of whiskey a day"

or something like that.

Anyway, RIP, god be with ye.

Blackrat has won this thread. That is an awsome post.

This was posted right after I posted said post in a completely different thread... Whups.

That was Allingham I think

The stories in his book were pretty brutal though. The conditions they were in were shocking.

I read this guy's autobiography a few years ago, pretty fascinating stuff. Not to mention the fact that he actually lived to be 111 years. Amazing.

Gutted. Harry Patch was a great guy. When Allingham died I was glad when the news told me that Patch was still alive. And now he's gone too. RIP.

It's sad to think that WW1 will soon be just regarded as one of those wars that happened in the past, since noone will be alive who witnessed the absolute brutality. RIP.

Aww damnit It had to happen at some point I suppose. I had read some article he had wrote for a newspaper that was about the intense fear of being hit with shrapnel on the front and how it finally happened to him. A brave man, indeed; the very last of his kind.

The only other WW1 survivors I can think of now are Frank Buckles (AEF, last American) and John Babcock (CET, last Canadian).
