I have alot of movies that i have saved on my comp, i will drag em to the actual recycle bin and empty them, but does that remove the actual space that it take up?

physically, no. the data is still written on the hard drive.

but for all intents and purposes that space is now free on your hard drive

really?
I thought only windows did that. I'm pretty sure macs (well, from what I've tried) delete physical data.

^^ MushroomEDIT: I don't think any computers physically deletes the data.

Step 1: Move said movies (we know you secretly mean porn, don't deny it) to the Trash Bin.

Step 2: Empty the Trash Bin.

Step 3: Download lots of porn to fill the space you just opened.

you have to do an extra step in order to completely overwrite the physical data.

Basically, yes, emptying the trash will free up space. However, if you want to deep-cleanse the files, there are ways.

Just by way of conversation, are you actually a masculist?

Like others said, deleting files only sets those harddrive parts as free to be written on, but it actually does appear like you have more free space on the HD.

A program I really like to free up space is Monolingual (http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/). It removes the unused language files from all your programs, and can actually free up a lot of space (I remember freeing over 1GB once).

I'm a masculist in the same sense that women who want gender equality are considered feminist.

I'm against discrimination against men. I'm also against discrimination against women, but it seemed funnier to say I was a masculist when the feminism thread was around.

Hitting delete will free the space up. And I believe "securely permanent delete" in the Finder drop down physically removes the data.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Ah I respect that. I'll stop identifying myself as feminist if we both agree to call ourselves egalitarians
