little question,
when i turn my amp on there is a humming noise which fades when i touch the strings. Is this "normal"?

sounds like a grounding issue with the guitar, nothing to do with the amp.

Is it a loud buzz, or a very quiet one?

If it's a very quiet one then it's normal and nothing to worry about. All my guitars do that depending on the environment I'm in.

+1. Sounds like the bridge isn't grounded properly.

it could be poor grounding of the amp though. my amp has a couple grouding issues that ive read can be fixed by doing some stuff inside the amp (basicly re-routing some of the wiring). could be similar with your amp, though it could also be the guitar.
