I was wondering, how do i work out what scale to use in a certain song?

I can play a couple of scales (g, bminor pentatonic, etc) but dont know how i'd know which scale to use if my friends were jamming or that.

I know its a noob question but i dont get it....

Thanks for your help in advance

First pick a key to jam in (Bm), then play your B minor pentatonics.

The chords used in B minor are derived from the notes in the scale:
B C# D E F# G A

A common progression would be i - iv - v, so Bm Em F#m, over this
you can play a B minor pentatonic without a problem.

If you dont pick a key, you should listen to what the other guy's playing and try to adapt,
think you're not ready for that yet. Keep practicing your pentatonics in every key so
if you're jamming and he does stuff in another key, the only thing you have to do is find the root and go from there.

Major Underlying Chord = Major Scale

Minor Underlying Chord = Minor Scale

You guess can find out more by reading the stickies about scales/modes and progressions.
