Today I clocked a Mesa Boogie DC-5 and an F-50 (both 112 combos) on Ebay. Currently both are quite a good price, so I'm thinking of bidding on one of them. The only problem is that I cannot try them out. So, which do you guys think would be better for me? I play mostly rock and metal - specifically Tool, A Perfect Circle, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Santana and AC/DC (other bands too, these should basically cover the range though). I'm not necessarily going to bid, I would just like to know if it would be worth it (I'd had to win an amp wich sounded terrible for my music).

Either one would work well.

The F-50 is a little smoother sounding, whereas the DC is more aggressive. However, the DC is probably a bit more versatile as it has a Graphic EQ instead of a Contour Knob.

The F series is a direct descendant of the DC, both have tons of gain and great cleans, but if metal tones are the biggest priority, I'd probably go for the DC-5.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

DC series is better for metal, although both amps are very similar. With my TS-9, the DC-3 sounds really good for hardcore/metalcore stuff. Without it, I get a Lamb of God type tone. also depends how you utilize the graphic eq and the main eq too. You can play basically ANYthing on a DC series. Never played an F, but heard it. sounds alright too, but I really like my DC-3. Plus, 50 watts is loud as ****, so you can definitely do gigs/play super loud and blast holes in people's abdomens. Keep it posted how high the bids go. I'd say $580-$650 ish for the DC-5 is pretty good.

I'd get the DC5 for the graphic eq, though the contour switch on the F30 I had sounded pretty damn nice.

Thanks guys, I think I'll bid on the DC-5 - see what kind of price it gets up to then make a move if it's still reasonable.

The price will be GB£.

Whatever happens, I'll post what it went for - whether it be in celebration or a blind rage (as was the case with my last bid - out done by £10 on an ENGL Screamer 50 in the last 3 seconds )

Try that man, it's free and it works great. It bids for you at the very last second. That way you can bid on both, just set it where if you win one it won't bid on the other. That way if you miss the DC5 you can still try for the F30.

DC-5s work best if you have at least two different guitars. with my hellraiser, my dc-5 is a metal beast, but with a tele, the mesa can do anything from aggressive blues to stoner rock. if you only have one guitar and need to cover a lot, get the f-50

I might give that a try...only thing is that the F-50 ends in just under 2 days, where as the DC-5 has almost 6 days left and since the DC-5 seems to be the one to go for its a little more tricky.

A side note:
F-50 is currently £300 + £15 postage
DC-5 is £449 + unknown postage (says is available so must be discussed after winning since pickup is prefered).

Hmm, how much money do you have to spend? If the DC5 is that high with that many days left I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get up and over your budget. The DCs are probably the more desirable amps, though the F30s hold their own just fine.

I could probably go to about £500 +/- a bit for postage or to secure a win. Money wise and for likelyhood of success the F-50 looks more promising at the moment. So far both have little interest (1 bid on F, still on start bid for DC) but that may change.

To further add to this confusing matter, there is a Studio 22 on the go aswell...is that does that compair to the other 2 or is it a different breed altogether?

I was under the impression they were lower gain amps, though I've not personally tried one myself. 450s the start? Makes more sense, probably won't see a bid on it at all until only a day or two is left.

Yeah, from what I've seen, amps are expensive in the UK, even preowned - it seems when Americans talk about amps in dollars, were paying that in pounds.

I'm thinking more towards the F series now...if its still reasonable near the end I think I'll go for it. Does anyone have any good clips that show off some of the sounds? Youtube yielded some, but the more I can get, the better.

EDIT: Another thought that I forgot about - can it handle low volumes? By all accounts they sound good, but unfortunatly that isn't worth much if it needs to be insanely loud to do it.

If anyone is interested, the F-50 went for £550. Clock still going on the DC-5.
