ok... so, I've been playin an epi les paul standard for like two years. and I'm friggin bored with it.

I play death metal, core, new to prog, and I was thinking of getting a tele and pretty much making it brutal as possible. just because.

i would strip it down, and maybe put on an abstract design or something. I'd cut out the pickup holes and put in humbuckers, cuz i play in c standard. im thinkin sd's.

I have about 5 years experience in woodworking, so I'm down for stripping the paint and adding another finish. I want it to have a rugged, cheap guitar look but sound as good as I can make it.

any suggestions?

Wait so you want to buy a guitar, to modify it, then drop SDs in it. For 200$?

jim root of slipknot has a tele similar to what you want to do. if you want one that realy sticks out maybe you should try do up a semi accoustic as they are rarely seen playing metal.

^ this.

Are you on the planet as I am? because that sounds pretty impossible.

to another post: semi acoustic? do you mean hollow or chambered body or something? There is a reason you don't see many in extreme metal; they are more prone to feedback.

Edit: I'm stupid and didn't read the OP.

Instead of blowing $200 then destroying, spend $89 and start from the bottom.

Edit: Also, consider getting a stacked pickup for the bridge, to save a load of routing:

Output and hum-canceling effect of a humbucker, without changing form factor.

Or

and a bit of routing.

Well, it's not quite from scratch, but it's definitely a cheaper option of getting what you want.. and it would truly give you a blank slate for your design.
