I am the bass player for my school's show choir, and the director has been looking at some new basses.
Basically, he's narrowed it down to 3 that he wants to take a closer look at.
But the thing is, I probably won't have a chance play these basses before he makes the purchase.
The choices are:

Ibanez SR 500
Fender Jazz
Laguna LB 524 SM

This is all within a budget of about $600.

I'm personally looking for a thin, comfortable neck with a low action, and has good note definition and clarity.
It'll literally be used for all kinds of styles, but I prefer a more gritty rock tone.

So which of the three would be the best choice?
Or is there another one within the budget that would be even better?

I'd slide with the Fender Jazz. I've fiddled with them at my local store, and even though I am not a bass player, I loved it very much. Great tone in my opinion.

-Marshall JCM2000 DSL 401
-Fender Hot Rod Deluxe
-Blackstar HT-1 mini stack

MIA or MIM Jazz? I love the Ibanez, but if its a SR500 vs a MIA Jazz, id go with the MIA.
#6
Fender Jazz, cannot possibly go wrong with that one,
I have yet to play a bad Fender bass, when its brand new.
#8
Fender or Ibanez.

probably Fender.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

The Jazz is MIM.

I have a Fender Jazz and an Ibanez SRX 590. I love both. It's hard to choose, the Fender for it's beautiful tone or the Ibanez for it's playability.

the Fender Jazz (even an MIM), will serve this purpose exceedingly well, and the Jazz is well known for it's ability to produce a gritty rock tone. the Jazz is also a proven work horse that will last for many years. imagine 20 years from now, when you visit your old school, that same bass will still be pumpin' out the thump for the young pups.
