i always see this type of question on tests and i don't know how to do it:

Eg., Find two consecutive integers whose sum is 89.

How do you solve for it? cause i usually just guess lol

thanks in advance

huh? 45 and 44?

#3

Divide it by zero.

x+x+1=89

2x+1=89

2x=88

x=44

44, 45

Wat?

2x+1=89

2x=88

x=44

44, 45

an Integer is a whole number

80 and 9 i assume would be correct.

Wat?

#6

x+(x+1)=89

2x=88

x=44, answer=44+45

44 and 45.

#8

44 and 45.. it means numbers that follow on from each other.. it usually involves halving it.

look at Karvid's post for more details.

hahahaha for laughing at me... ha.

#10

Halve it and you're nearly there, it's easy to do the rest.

This this this. Kinda embarrassing question to ask

#12

Boy. You'll hate proofs in whatever the equivalent of Math C30 is where you live. :p

This is how I usually solve a problem like this:

80/2= 40

Two consecutive integers that = 9 are 4 and 5

40 + 4= 44

40 + 5= 45

44+ 45= 89

But this is a bit more difficult than a simple equation.

2x + 1 = 89

2x= 88

x= 44

44 + ?= 89

45

80/2= 40

Two consecutive integers that = 9 are 4 and 5

40 + 4= 44

40 + 5= 45

44+ 45= 89

But this is a bit more difficult than a simple equation.

2x + 1 = 89

2x= 88

x= 44

44 + ?= 89

45

this should be in the only maths science thread.*reported* but here is a full method anyway cos i'm a nice chap

2 integers, call them a and b, with a<b add to make 89

=> a+ b = 89

since they are consecutive

=> a+1 = b

=> 2a + 1 = 89

=> a = 44

=> b = 45
