Im basically into psy, blues, jazz etc and Ive been playing for a while. I've got all the basic techniques down right, can play fairly fast but not at shred speed. I like some melodic metal, Maiden for example. What songs should I start off with?

You are what they call a “rhythm guitarist”. While it's not as glamorous as playing lead you can still get laid. Especially if you can sing and play.

try some maiden its not too hard except the solos that can be pretty tricky but you could just learn the rythem guitar behing thats what ive done with run to the hills and then learn the solos later when your better.
theres also stuff like priest you may like some faith no more and moderner stuff theres steel panther who are pretty epic and just for fun JOURNEY

The complete Master of Puppets album by Metallica. Maiden is pretty fun too. You should definately check out Hallowed be Thy Name and Number of the Beast by them.

Ive been listening to what maiden I have, I think I could do Phantom of the Opera, leads and all... sounds like its within my range... Any other tracks that are around that speed or a little slower?

I second the iced earth. Dragon's Child is an easy one, Phantom Opera Ghost is epic.

^Phantom of the opera is a fun one, I'd suggest Aces High or Flash of the Blade, not too hard.

You could try playing some of their ballads like Wasting Love or Out of the Shadows, they're pretty slow. Also Children of the Damned is a kick ass Maiden song that for the most par is fairly slow, ooooohhhhh check out Revelations as well for a good slower song.

Wrathchild is perfect it's a short song. You don't have to worry about playing as fast as them it takes time for that but Wrathchild should be good for you. The Idles of March is another good short song, Running Free is a good one no solo basically if you do studio and is fun. Wasting Love and Blood Brothers are good too for melodic. Basically I can go on but just listen to some of their songs and focus on one.

Just because I found it the other day, dusted it off and just pushed play... Accept

Not quite the Autobahn at 3am with the pedal on the floor but it makes driving the family wagon a bit more tolerable...

Check out Another Life from Iron Maiden
