Looking to get a new amp head. I got the Marshall cab, and now I need a tube head!

I looked into the Peavey Windsor, and being an all tube head, it's going for $120 on Ebay, brand new. I figure ill end up probably paying around $200 because, more then likely there will be a bidding war at the near end of the auction. I've read reviews and heard sound clips, it sounds like a great amp, with the exception of 1 channel But, for the price I really don't think you can beat it, and I can always roll the volume knob down a bit to get a cleaner tone.

What I'm asking is your guy's opinion on the Windsor. I mean it's my first tube amp, so I really need some opinions on what to expect from it. And also, do you think there are any other tube heads out there for $500 dollars or under that might be be a bit better? I can go $100 dollars over 500, it really doesn't matter.

I play ROCK! I like Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Creed, Thin Lizzy, Motley Crue, Hendrix, ZZ Top, Van Halen, etc.. So any heads that might fit into that category are helpful for me to know. Thanks in advance

the B-52 comes as a head. The B-52 will be good for metallica like stuff, but for everything else you listed, you should get the windsor. Also i think the B-52 has better cleans, they weren't great, but they were ok

Go play on the windsor and the b 52. Then choose. You can take all of our opinions, but yours is the most important when it comes to your gear

^ Roll down the volume knob, split one's coils... usually works for me.

^Not everyone can split their coils.

For $600 the Windsor shouldn't even be considered. You could get a used Kustom Coupe 72 or a Laney AOR 50/100 or Sovtek MIG50/60/100. The Laney is a hot rodded JCM800, the Sovtek is a very close copy of a Marshall JMP, and the Kustom Coupe 72 is a modern amp with the vintage british vibe.
