I was browsing Ebay the other day and came across this bad boy and bought on a bit of an impulse

Hmm whats this? I can't quite make it out....

It has teh t00bz!

Oh I see now, its an ENGL E530 preamp

This thing is beastly, the gain is super tight and articulate and the cleans are glassy and warm. I sure do love impulse buying

Clips will follow shortly.

Kewl, where is the rest of your rack? What power amp will you be running through?

There's the rest of my rack

As you can see its under construction, for now I'm using it for direct recording with impulse and also running it through my RM100's power section. Sounds great both ways

I'm just about to order a rack cabinet and possibly a power conditioner to make a start on the rack though.

for the good polish as well. Once you go rack, you rarely go back...

Just so much more versatile, portable, stereo and all out sexy.

This is probably a really, really stupid question, but could you just plug a lead into the headphone jack of that pre-amp, into the input of a solid state guitar amp? and would it sound tube? So basically you're using the pre-amp as a head, and the solid state guitar amp as a cab

I don't think It'd be a great idea. The signal sent from the headphone port is waaaay hotter than a guitar signal and as such would probably fry the SS amp.

The E530 actually has a stereo 2x1.5 watt ss power amp built in to power the headphone jack and there is also a switch on the back to allow you to drive a cab straight from the preamp.

Great sounding clip!

To the guy who wants to use the pre-amp with the SS cab, wouldn't you need a power amp as well?

Thats the one I use as well. How about the e530 settings? I bet they're similar to my blackmore settings as well.

Its set how it is in the pic of my "rack". I didn't spend that long experimenting with what would work well in a mix. I pretty much just set everything to noon took out enough bass and set the gain and recorded. With more tweaking it could sound better, its a little muffled atm.

Wow, you have the bass really low. My blackmore preamp settings:
Bass 50%
Middle 60%
Treble 60%

I guess its pretty different afterall. Has way more gain as well.

Yer to be fair thats mainly the guitar I'm using, Mahogany body with massive strings means it can get muddy quickly even with EMGS. If I recorded using my Ibanez it would be a fair bit higher.

Theres also the fact that I was trying to get a tone that sat in the mix easily and didnt take much if any EQing to sit in the mix as It was a demo of the amp.
