So, here in Australia the government is planning on issuing every student with a mini laptop, over the next few years, and guess what year gets them first?

Antyway my everyone in my year (at my school at least) should be getting the laptops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenovo_s10) witin the next few weeks. I'm pretty pumped, because i dont have my own computer, and despite being small im sure itt'l be fine.

Use in School Environment
In late 2008, the Australian Government announced plans that all secondary school students from years 9 to 12 in New South Wales will be given a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e Netbook free of charge. In Term 3 2009 the laptops will be given out and every subsequent Year 9 student will get one each. This initiative was confirmed early 2009[1]. Students may keep their laptop if they complete Year 12. Over 20000 laptops are being made.

Why is the government giving them to us? I think its because they want to "technologically advance education". Works for me.

this is the biggest ****ing waste of money ever. I'm doing a ****in computer science degree at uni and I never ever even got close to thinking "hey this would be a lot easier if i had a laptop" at primary or high school.

I don't want to go into a massive rant but yeah, i think this is a really stupid idea.

wait, Australians have electricity?

They apparently also have some limited access to the Internet now...

And, on a somewhat related note, The Matrix just came out in New Zealand.

I laugh at all the Year 9 kids going "OH WOW I GET A LAPTOP!!!!!!" when it has all the restrictions the Department of Education put on school computers. That means no inappropriate content and no installing of programs. You do get Windows 7 and Microsoft Office free though.
hahahaha look at all you people posting on this forum

Considering how australia normally handles restricting "inappropriate content" I doubt it will be difficult to get around that.

Not the best specs but for a free laptop it looks alright. Now you can have a wank while watching online porn thanks to your government.

*sings*Wanking Matilda, wanking Matilda. . .

Actually no. My teachers at BSDE (Brisbane School of distance Education) are trialling the computers. You can not install any programs on it, nor can you access any non *government approved* websites (like google is banned from it)

I'm pretty sure once the government gets tired of picking phone calls from 15 year-olds asking them for porn, they'll reapprove Google.

This is crap IMO, Rudd is being idealistic and not realising that the kids will only be using it for either a) porn, b) solitaire, or c) porn.

There goes the taxpayers' money... but then again I may not be informed of all the details.

I doubt those laptops are going to last a year to be honest, how many kids will drop them, or throw them at someone or smash up their *enemys* computers...

This idea sucks. I'm in Year 12. Will I get one?

I remember when I was 5 and really wanted a laptop. I used to get paper and fold it in half so that one side would be a screen and the other would be the keys. Then I'd draw on the screen. Every time I went on a new web page, I'd have to erase it all and then draw it on again.

Dark days they were.

So basically it's a scheme to restrict the internet. You give kids laptops, knowing that their parents won't buy them another one, restrict their functionality, blocking the kids from viewing anything you don't agree with and you're a step closer to totalitarianism. That's actually bloody smart. It doesn't cause the same kickback that a full blown internet filter does and you look like the good guys by supporting education.

You're smarter than I thought Australia.

Sweet, now a real reason to love being in Year 9, 2009

WAIT WAIT WAIT

Screw you, NSW! Bastards, we want laptops too! The hell sort of an ass is Rudd for giving only one state this? Or am I terribly mistaken?

This is stupid, why?

Because im jealous that the year 9 every year from now is getting them (im year 10)

There **** laptops

They are useless, they have firewalls built into them so you must use your DET login no matter where you are, sites are still blocked.

There gonna get broken and stolen, and your gonna have every kid bitching

The amount of laptops the school gets, depends on the number of kids in the school, so not every year 9 kid might be able to get one.

Whats gonna happen to them when they finish school? There too outdated to reuse for other kids, and may be damaged. And there is no point in keeping it considering how **** they are, and the whole firewall blocking thing.

Sell it and put the money towards buying a new guitar instead.

If they ask where it went tell them your dog ate it.

I totally agree, use the money on getting better computers in our computers classrooms (seriously our computers take 30 minutes to start up completely, almost half our lesson gone.

And/or buy computers that are fitted onto desks in classrooms, and buy every kid a external hard drive, so everyone has a computer, not just pussy year 9ers (who at my school, knowing them, wont have theirs for long, their all try hards and will throw them at each other.)

STUPIDEST. IDEA. EVAR!
