Its my sister's birthday today and mum decided to make a really big cake for her birthday party. (30cm by 23cm by 5 cm / 12" by 9" by 2")

Problem is that the cake didn't rise properly in the middle (6cm by 8cm / 2" by 3") and mum's out. Now I'm not a regular cake cooker so i don't know if it's meant to by like that (my sister assured me it isn't) or if it isn't cooked properly.

choc.cake.edit: I stuck a skewer into it and it came out slightly wet/soggy

Wait, did she bake the whole thing at once in one big rectangle? Why would she do that? The best option would've been to bake it in parts and then put it all together with icing. It's probably not done.

I'm a masturbaker. It sounds like it just needs to cook longer, although the center can "fall" if somehow it is shaken while baking (earthquake, door slamming, etc...)

It's really too late now, but leave it in the oven a bit longer next time. Raise it to a higher rack if the edges are burned or dry.
