I was playing Road Trippin by RHCP, and I realized , im playing with my thumb and index the whole time, while on the music video, John is definitely playing with more than that and differently. So, I was wondering, what exactly is the etiquette of fingerpicking? Are there any suggestions of ways to build coordination with the rest of the fingers so I can fingerpick properly? Is the way im doing it ok?

Usually, the bottom three strings (EAD) are plucked with the thumb. The top the (GBe) are plucked with the index, middle and ring fingers, respectively.

generally the pinky isn't used. there's no rule saying you can't though, but i have not heard of a guitarist that uses it for picking.

I actually use my pinky quite often. It's ackward at first, but with practice, you'll get get used to it and build up strength
