Hey guys & girls.

Thought i would try something a little different compared to most of the summer builds that happen on here.

The idea is that i will build a guitar from scratch, spending no money whatsoever on the build itself and only using the basic tools that i have, and parts that i can find, beg, steal and/or borrow.

Hopefully, in the end i will have a fairly playable archtop/semi acoustic classical electric guitar. Not everyones taste i know, but I'm looking to build a guitar that is totally unique and that has its very own sound.

I managed to salvage a neck from an old classical guitar that i found in a skip a year or so ago (along with the bridge, which i will also be using). I managed to find a pretty beat up table top made from Mahogany which i will be using for the top.

TLDR; I are building a guitars from scratch spending no money whatsoever. Lots of begging, stealing and/or borrowing.

Updates and pictures to follow!

The neck is now pretty much finished, so i will try and grab some pics of that either now or tomorrow.

If you did this, i would love you forever and ever! Seriously though, I'm sure i could trade my way for some strings. I would feel so guilty if anyone gave me something!

Anyway, cheers for the interest guys

Are you going to cut the body with your teeth, and sand it with a nail file?

I don't want to appear rude or anything, but it clearly says that i will use the basic tools that i already have. Or at least borrow them from friends, neighbours etc. (But to be honest, i think i can get by with what i have).

Well actually, as the strings are half steel, half nylon - I'm going to need a piezo of some sort. I managed to grab a piezo transducer from a buzzer, so i will hook that up to a pot, and then hook that up to a connector.

It wos liek deliberate innit, yo. Werd.

Proper Update:

I have cut both the bottom and top pieces of the body today. And I'm halfway through routing the bottom. I will get on with routing out both of the sides this afternoon, hopefully.

Pictures to follow, as i know everyone likes pictures. Mmmmhmmm.

That's going to be a really sick guitar. I have an extra set of Ernie Ball strings and 6 cheap tuners if you need them.

Edit- I'm not sure if the tuners would work with nylon strings

I managed to grab some pictures of the routed bodies.

Bottom half routed:

Top and tailed:

Top half finished:

There are more pics on the Flickr set thingy-ma-bobby.

Tomorrow, I plan on routing the violin type 'scrolls'. This shouldn't be too hard, but it might take a while.

As soon as thats done, I'm routing a cavity on the back, so there is access to the electrics etc. Then the two half's get glued, shaped and the guitar is generally put together. I'm really surprised and happy with how fast it's coming along!
#22
that actually looks friken awesome.

whatever you need, ask me and I'll see if i have an old set of it.

Willing to help out however I can.

Pictures of the freshly routed violin-esque scrolls! Surprisingly, it wasn't that hard to do. Or at least nowhere near as hard as i thought it would be.

Next step, routing the cavity and somehow salvaging a 1/4" connector.

She's pretty much finished now. The bridge is glued. The nut is being glued and the strings are on their way. All i need now is a jack and a connector to make her fully electric.

I'll grab some pics for those who are interested in a bit.
#30
As promised, the pictures. Would be cool to hear all your thoughts and stuff.

I will probably string it tomorrow, if i can get them strings. I might wait a bit until the electrics though.

at first i thought this would just fail. But the guitar actually looks pretty good.

You will HAVE to use nylon or low tension strings seeing as though the neck probably doesn't have a truss rod.
#38
Hey cheers guys for all the comments!

Couldn't find any nylon strings, so i'll just have to wait until they fall out of the sky or something (or maybe i will just have to buy them and not tell you lot, so as far as you're all concerned i got them for free. Of course i couldn't tell you any of this)

AND, later on this year, i will be making a 'proper' one of these - but spending more time and money on it. I'll use nicer woods, better necks, cooler electronics - but probably still the same shape as i really really dig it.

Anyway, yeah thanks again for all your nice comments!
#39
lookin' solid! I don't know if it's your camera, but the pictures themselves just make it look that much better

WTF is up with the body shape? It looks like a ES335 got squished down or compressed or something. Its still cool though.
