I work at a pizza parlor in my small town and have for a year now, and I've always gotten decent tips and on a friday I'd typically go home with 10+ dollars in pocket, split between us 4 workers, which means 40 bucks in tips total. I know you make more at a nice restaurant, obviously, and I'm using "decent" in a lax fasion... but for a small restaurant it's not too bad.

Anyway. At the start of summer, we started giving 100% of all tips that came in to a fundraiser; One of the teachers at my old High School (who I had a few classes with) has a son with Leukemia. I think he is around 4 or 5 years old. It's great; the whole community is chipping in and helping him pay for chemotherapy, and I've heard they've raised over a million dollars for his cause over the past year.

I didn't have too big of a problem for awhile; after all, it's for a good cause. But it's been 3 months now. I've easily given him 100+ dollars of my money. And I'm thinking to myself, all summer has gone by, and I haven't had any tips. How is this even legal?

Yesterday at work, I asked my boss to put the tip jar up next to the donation jar (which entirely replaced the tip jar; I just wanted the tip jar next to it). She says "No all our tips are going to that fundraiser"

Then I said, as an employee, I need my tips. It's been long enough. So I think she had to put the tip bucket back; as a legality.

I feel a little bad about it, but at the same time; damnit, there's a reason I have a job; to make money, and tips are a major part of my income.

Is it a dick move?

TL;DR: My tips have been going to a kid with leukemia for 3 months and I just told my boss to give me my tips back, and she had to. Am I in the wrong?

have fun

No, it's acceptable. It should be optional, not something you have to give money to. It's like if some store made all employee's commission go to charity.

This one.

I think you should get your tips, and what you choose to do with them (give them to the charity or spend them on yourself) should be entirely your choice. I think it actually is illegal to do that. At the very least you should be able to write that off as a tax deductable charitable whatever.

You're 15. You can't legally work. Shut up.

Ya, that kid's dying. And his family probably needs support. But you gotta look out for number one (that's yourself). I'm all for charities, and I think that it's a good thing what this pizza shop is doing. But let's face it, I'm sure a million+ dollars is enough to cover at least most of the expenses (I've never known anyone that went through chemo, so I could be wrong), and TS needs the tips.

Ya, it's going to a worthy cause, but you shouldn't be forced to donate just because you work there. I don't even think it should be up to the customer to decide where that money goes. I think 100% of the tips should go to the employees, and they can donate whatever they want (if anything) out of the tips.

I'll be honest; the reason I made this thread is a co worker of mine, a girl (of COURSE, she's a hot girl) who thinks that I'm being an asshole. Of course she's hot, so she's a bitch too, they often go hand in hand.

She said "He needs the money more than you do" and i'm like

Hell girl, give him your paycheck then if it's so important to you.

She was there when I told my boss to put the tip jar back. Here's what she had to say, "You realize you are the only one who works here who has a problem with the tips going to him"

When all of us were leaving, she is the only one who put her tips in the fundraiser jar. I said "You realize you're the only one who isn't taking your tips now? Just thought I'd point that out."

I felt satisfied.

You're probably a selfish asshole, but it is the right thing to do if you're not making sufficient money, or if you need your cash. Besides, I'm not sure about the logistics about American Pizza parlors, but up in Canada, your wages get garnished to make room for your tips. If you make minimum wage, then this is illeagal. Also, just ask for a raise or your tip money.
And I'm pretty sure 1Million + is more than enough for Chemo.
Worst case, just get a job in another town.

In the US the way it works is that people who work in tipped positions (mainly waiters) only have an hourly minimum wage of like $2.45 an hour and are expected to generate most of their income from tips.

Granted though, I kind of doubt this guy is working as a tipped employee if he's only taking in $10 a night.

Meh, fuck her dude. Either literally or figuratively. But seriously, don't feel like a dick. If she wants to donate, then all the power to her. If you wanna keep your money, well, it's YOUR money. You can do whatever you want with it.

Sure, it's a nice thing to do. But you need what you need. Tell that bitch that if she "doesn't have a problem with her money going to him" then to deposit her entire paycheck into the fundraiser. If she doesn't, she's a hypocrite, if she does, either she's calling your bluff or daddy pays for everything (maybe both).

I'm not sure how it is in America, but I cook at a bar/pizza shop in Canada and there is a poster with the rules and regulations for the shop (no one really follows them) but one of them says that the cooks get 10% of the tips, and it's illegal to under tip us.

As far as morality goes, it's your money, you decided what you do with it. You should never be forced to donate money, if you do it should be out of your own heart. Some people might think your a dick, but I'm actually proud of you that you stood up for what you thought was wrong where other people wouldn't because they were scared of what people might think of them. And it's been mentioned before, millions of dollars are going to research, I doubt their going to miss your $100.

Wow. You guys have it bad.
In Socialist Canada, minimum wage (for me, in Québec, land of the freeloaders) is $9.00, and $8.50 for tipped employees, my girlfriend easily makes 50$ per 5 hour shift, with an $8.50 pay.

Maybe we don't have it that bad, because I made considerably more than that waiting tables at $5.50 an hour plus tips.

No offense to who you quoted but I've never heard of anyone getting paid $2.45 an hour. Maybe it is just like this in california.

I make $8.00 an hour, which is minimum wage in California, and about 15-20 hours a week. $400 a month give or take, plus I'd say $50 tips, likely more if I worked weekends, which goes exclusively towards food when I'm at school.

It's not the best job because I literally cannot get more hours with the number of employees they have, but hey; I'm not going to find anything else as close as it is and so easy to work around my school schedule.

Hell, onward and upward as they say.

You haven't probably because that's only the federal bare minimum for people working a tipped posistion, if you're only making $50 a week in tips while working 20 hours a week you are not in a tipped position.
