I think you might find some really good bass lines in some technical death metal. oh wait, you don't want heavy metal, because it takes no talent.

Mk well....idk what you're looking for as far as difficulty is concerned but just look at any Chili Peppers song and you're almost guaranteed a good bass line. If you feel like losing your soul to bass for a few weeks/months/years you could try out Victor Wooten, i think the coolest is Classical Thump. Stu Hamm is my personal favorite bass playing and most of his stuff isn't too hard lol. Or if you want some simple lines that just happen to sound cool with a band you could try some Incubus

Umm, define modern real fast? If its anything like literature then it'll be a bit more difficult.

Also, did you actually mean bass only songs ... or bass lines?
"Rome wasn't built in a week"

"Yeah but when they built rome, they didnt go "hey look, there's a functional building" AND ****ING KICK IT OVER AND PISS ON THE ASHES BECAUSE THE PEASANTS WERE CRYING THAT IT WAS TOO GLORIOUS AND AWESOME."

"Hey Rosetta" - Check them out. Awesome bass player with great bass lines.

notable songs: Yes Yes Yes! - two bass solos and a ****ing sick bass line
Red Heart - very creative bass line.

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say.... I'm not even going to justify it with an explanation into how stupid that is.

On Topic try some Squarepusher, it's a bit out there but pretty good. Maybe some Mars Volta too, the intro to day of the baphomets is a good start.

that was unprovoked and rude. if I heard someone say that in person with the same context, I would have slapped them.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

No one's getting into a genre flame war here. Warned for spam and borderline flaming.

+1 on the Mars Volta, and definitely +1 on the chili peppers stuff mentioned above

You could post on UG during breaks, watch youtube videos, read up on some theory, watch porn, or any computer-related activities you enjoy. There are other options as well, such as TV, sexual intercourse, or even just take a snack and water break.

hysteria - muse

one you must learn as a bassist

Didnt take me to long to learn this. also a great song with a great bassline would be Carousel from Blink-182. You can use a pick but you dont have to even though theres chords. (you'll see what I mean when you look it up)
