I've fallen in love with this guitar finish and I have been inspired to paint a les paul copy just like this.

Does any one know what type of paint this is?

Some kind of metallic blue on a carved top.
build 1, finished 1/15/11

Every time I try to pick it up like falling sand,
As fast as I pick it up,
it runs away through my clutching hands.
There's nothing else I can really do...

To me it just likes a regular blue finish, then enhanced in photoshop.

I was thinking that it looked like a normal, gloss blue finish, that had been put through a mild blur or bloom filter.. but I figured that TS wanted to reproduce that effect on his guitar, which would mean going for a satin clear coat.

It is a metallic blue flake, they have some epiphones that have that and red I think

That is not Flake.

Flake, is much, much more obvious that regular a metallic finish.

Ok so it's a metallic blue with a satin clear coat.

My next question is where can I get these paints?

You can just use regular Auto paints. Find a nice electric blue car, then find that colour in a touch up can from a store

Primer, paint, clear, wet sanding...can all be done.

Or you could go down the route of Custom Paint...which is similar, but better...but dearer.

My guitar

You be the judge, from up close it looks more like metallic flake, but from far away it looks like just metallic finish

That wasn't a close up. Nore was it teh guitar we are talking about.

Yours is not flake either.

Yes, it may be metallic, which has flakes in it, but they are very, very small. "Flake" as we custom painters recognise it...is bigger and more obvious.

So yes, I will be the judge

From the picture I can see that it has flakes. But looking at the les paul, I can see it has alot smoother finish.

I think I'll go for the auto paints. If it goes well I might do it with the proper paints.

Where can I get a satin lacquer from?
