I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Special II this spring with the intentions of it being my summer project. Well things didn’t go quite as planned so I am just now getting started on it. For all you naysayers I know it is a cheap guitar but this project serves two purposes, 1) to give me hands on experience working on a guitar that I can make mistakes on and 2) to provide me with a solid backup guitar that has a different sound than my number 1 axe.

I am currently waiting on my GFS order which consists of Mean 90 pickups, a “Clapton” style midboost, 3x3 keystone “green key” tuners, and a pair of the clearance matched ‘bucker set in zebra which are going to replace the stock pups in my Epi LP Studio.

Since you guys pics sooo much here are some that will hold you off until I get my parts and can really get to work.

I was extremely bored last night and so I decided to get the guitar all ready so I can just install parts when they arrive so here are some pics after the prep work.

The midboost is going in that middle hole

I drilled a hole connecting the cavity I drilled to the neck route, you can barely make out the hole but it is there.

Used a router for the first time, didn’t work out so well but its on the back and its functional.

I love the cavity cover, do you mind if I steal the idea?

What exactly are your plans? I see the midboost and tuners, and it looks like you're doing a pickup switch as well. Are you going to refinish it? I'm not such a big fan of the current finish it has.
#4
Let me know what you think of the midboost from GFS, I was thinking of trying one of their midboosts or something but was worried about the quality

I am swapping pups, adding the midboost and putting in new tuners. I also upgraded the switch and moved it to the normal les paul spot. I would re do the finish but the guitar appears to be laminate snd I don't want to have to deal with that.

on a side note, Jim would you fix the spelling of guitar in my title if you see this?

i've changed mine.... i had to do this double clicking esc thing though so the thread wouldn't load. quite weird. much easier to have a mod do it. looks neat so far. recess the TOM and change the neck angle? or would that be difficult on a bolt on with the screw angles?
#15
Why would I need to recess the TOM?

Got my order today, everything is installed and wired up. It works but only some of the time. It will cut out, the volume knob doesn't work correctly, the tone knob is wonky. When it works it sounds great, but I'm too frusterated to continue rewiring it to try and find the problem so I am going to have a tech wire it up for me. Anyone know how much I can expect to shell out to have that done?

Dont bring it to a tech, its a huge waste of money. My local tech charges $60 for a 1 humbucker, 1 volume wiring, so I cant imagine how much that'll be. Take the time to do it yourself, wait a few days until your less frustrated if you have to

+1 this is what i did with my strat. i bet you'll just need to re-solder some things and make sure all of your grounds are right. you might have a wiring that is touching the cavity, and that cavity looks shielded, so that might be grounding you out.

but yea. just take a couple days off, play with your main guitar, have fun, and then come back to it with fresh eyes. it'll be worth it.

tuners half done

tuners done, when putting these on I realized just how unsymetrical the headstock is

finished product

When working this baby roars. The pickups are incredibly fat sounding, yet they still sound reminiscent of single coils. I may never leave the neck pickup thats how much I like it. The mid boost works nicely, sounds better with the beck pup though. With the bridge pup and the max boost it sounds a liitle like if you were to leave a wah on in the middle position. The tone knob is very screwy. It gets bassy when turned all the way up, and as you roll it down it gets brighter. The volume knob doesn't control the volume, but I haven't really figured out what its doing yet because its different everytime you turn the knob.

I really like what you've done with this guitar on the electrics side of things. I think the aesthetics are nasty though, in terms of the paint. Have you thought of doing a refinish on that side of things? With all that done, it would be a nicely modded guitar, that's for sure.

I have thought about a refinish, but right now I don't really want to do one. It would mean refinishing the neck as well, or making the guitar black, and the thing I like about this is that it changes it up. My 2 other electrics are both black so its something different.
