What are some things to look for when testing out a cab (just the cab)? I may be looking at an '85 Marshall JCM800 4x12 sometime, but it won't be with my own head. Is there anything specific I should be looking for when I'm testing out a cab?

That it sounds good with your amp, surely?

Well I was wondering if there's anything technical that I should check out first

That the cab matches ohms with an output on your head, speaker watt is high enough (usually about 2x as much watt in your speakers than your amp is safe with a tube amp), and umm... that it's not made with rotten wood.

if your not going to try it out with your amp, then its kind of useless. at least try it out with the same kind of amp you have.

I find your question quite confusing, it's not totally clear. First time I just skim read it and the title and answered your question, but I read it again, and it's strange.

You won't be using your own head? Just to test it or not at all?
