Is an epiphone valve junior half stack a good amp for jamming with a band?
also, is a ds-1 a good mix with it for alt. rock tones?

Jamming in the garage with a band....Yes, Gigging - No (unless you mike it to the house PA)

Yes, in a garage or in house setting.
But definately not for a small venue gig. Unless it's miked to the house PA

that's what i don't get, i played bass at my church a while back, and the guitarist used a 5w hayes tube amp and didn't have to turn it up too high. it was a pretty big church.

A church has great acoustics and carries the sound very well. also might have been miked.

You can't count on good room acoustics playing gigs at a bar or something.

It sounds like you proabably want to go a little bit bigger.
the 5 watt will be enough, but barely...

Try a Fender Blues Jr. 15 watts

i would get a bigger amp, but money is kinda short.
I just figured a lower watt tube amp would be a good step to getting good tones and a good recording amp.

Well like I said, the Valve Jr is a great little amp.
It will keep up with a drummer and bass in a small environment.

If you're just jamming with a band and not gigging, it's fine.

If you're planning on gigging, I'd stick with your current amp and save a little longer for a 15-30 watt amp.
