I want to see this film. At first, I thought it wasn't going to be that good, since there had been little advertising for it up until a few weeks ago. Now, reviews are coming out, and I have seen the trailer. It's not trying to copy Independence Day. In fact, I think there's going to be little action or explosions. And, it has a very unique plot. Aliens don't invade and try and take over the planet. Instead:

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

I'm pumped.

The polish are coming!
There's a special sex move I do called the Charizard.
It's where you light the girls pubes, then put it out with your cum and run around the room flapping your arms screaming, "You don't have enough badges to train me!"

Reviews are all good, and it looks amazing.

Peter Jackson was mentioned somewhere so yeah it will pwn.

It was actually "Peter Jackson Presents: A film by some other director"

I don't think he had much hand in the creation of it, but they stuck his name on the please the studios, in the same way that "Hero" was only able to get a US release because they got Quentin Tarantino to "present" it.

EDIT: Although happytimeharry says he was the producer, so it seems I stand corrected.
Gear:

Plan to see it tomorrow night. I've been waiting all Summer to see it. Ever since I heard Blomkamp was doing it, with Jackson as producer, I was instantly hooked on it. Just seeing the short clips Blomkamp has done in the past (Halo and Alive in Joburg) give me a lot of faith in the guy, despite this being his first full-length movie.

He's not. He's producing.

I remember the thread with a shitload of viral marketing for this a while back. It was cool with everyone trying to make sense of it, and the marketing was definately effective, because I'm damn sure going to see this.

Rotten Tomatoes gave this film a 100% score... they hardly ever do that, plus, this is a Peter Jackson film, so I know it'll be great.

Yeah, RT is usually a pretty reliable and accurate source. I don't disagree with them too often.

Well to be honest, a lot of movie ratings are pretty skewed early on in the film's release. They settle out eventually. I'm sure District 9 will eventually find itself at low 90's, upper 80's. That's purely speculation though. Haven't seen it yet.

True, but either way, if this movie scores higher than Fight Club and AHX, then... gentleman, a masterpiece has been created.

Yeah this may be true, but let's not rush things and create another Dark Knight moment.

Really? I think it looks awesome.

I've heard that they portrayed it in a very realistic way, and that it wasn't cheesy at all.
