Hi, I am thinking of getting a Marshall JCM800, on it there is a master and a pre amp volume. I'm not sure what this means. Is the pre amp so you can turn the master volume up to get the high gain but still have it quiet?
pre amp volume = gain
If video games make you violent, does monopoly make you a millionaire?
pre-amp = gain
master volume = loudness.

Effectively in laymans terms.

you can use your pre-amp to add all or most of the gain to your sound, but in a lot of cases the end result is pretty muddy sounding. Its the combination of cranking your pre-amp and master at the same time that tightens up your sound and gives the best sounding distortion("best" being a general agreement here and of course totally subjective).
