As a session guitarist myself, I can tell you that it's like everything else. Some are not so good while others are absolutely amazing. One of the most important skills needed is sight reading, something that many guitarists overlook.

Understanding the differences of various artist and genres of music. Then being able to perform on the spot in these different styles.....yeah, pretty good.

They are supposed to be a sort of jack of all trades sort of musician, can sight read, get a bit of music done in 30 minutes, all that sort of thing, so they are very good musicians, but they are often overlooked.
