I need to build up speed on this, and I don't know which picking pattern would be best.

Triplets moving down a string each time.

-4-4-4-----------------
--------------4-4-4-----------
----------------------4-4-4-----
------------------------------6-6-6-
--------------------------------------6-
-------------------------------

down up down.......down up down?

down up down........up down up.......down up down?

up down up........up down up?

I would definitely say the second pattern- it's the smoothest motion out of the three, and you'll find that the notes will sound smooth as well.

id say a hybrid of the second and third, using rules of economy picking:

dud, udu, udu, udu...

that way youre going the shortest root to each string.

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.

All 4. Get used to playing things in uncomfortable ways.

you're not always going to have a choice, or the time to think through each move.

there are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

id say the third one, because usually when you start on the high e string doing some sort of alternate picking, you always start plucking up.

huh? That bit isn't economy picking

Like above, pick it every way possible, not forgetting to play some of it accenting different notes. if you are just using this as an exercise and it's not a bit from a song then I would recommend puting some actual fretting hand movement in there so you are practicing synchronizing your hands rather than just trem picking 3 notes per string

Oops, I copy/pasted the wrong notes...... fixed. Picking pattern would be the same though. It's an Ab minor barre chord.

Economy picking is the out and out fastest way to play it, usung a single upstroke to move between strings.

 U D U-U D U-U D U-U D U-U
-4-4-4---------------------
-------4-4-4---------------
-------------4-4-4---------
-------------------6-6-6---
-------------------------6-
---------------------------

However, that may not give you the sound you want, you just need to experiment.
