I'm not much of an expert on guitars, but Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins uses lace sensor pickups in his Strats and the sound he gets is surprisingly thick for a Strat, so I was wondering if guitarists use lace sensors as an alternative to humbucker pickups? As both types of pickup seem to give Strats a lot more solid and heavier tone.

I'm a total noob when it comes to guitars so I gotta ask.

What is a thick sound? Warm notes etc? I know they're obviously different ways of how the note sounds but can someone give me a example and compare it to a less thick or warm sound please.

Sorry and thank you

Do you know about the pickup positions on a strat?

Well, the neck position is normally thought of as warmer sounding, and the bridge position sounds quite jangly.

He does now but in the days of classic Smashing Pumpkins he used a set of lace sensors.

Yea I kinda get pickups (a lil bit), like HSS, the humbucker being the one at the neck etc.

I'm on a pc with no sound, I'll check out those vids when I'm home thanks!

Yep I remember you posting in my NGD thread, love that guitar

EDIT: Suppose I should help TS, if you want a thicker, noiseless sound without changing to humbuckers (maybe extra routing, new pickguard etc) then I'd go for the lace set. They do a decent job but they're not exactly humbuckers, there's a few other options out there as well.

He actually uses rail pickups I think, at least this one does.

The new Strats he's been using on the reunion tour (and the BC signatur strat) have rails but this guitar, which was his main axe during the Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie tour, has lace sensors:

One beast of a guitar too, it used to be sunburst and the silver paint started to fade on the MCIS tour, so you can tell it had been given much loving!:
