Before the flaming begins, I've lusted after that guitar since I was a little kid.
Eddie is the whole reason I took up guitar in the first place. So if for no other reason than to hang it on my studio wall for inspiration, and to bust out for some Van Halen covers during the occasional gig...it would be awesome to have one.

So I've got a chrome original Floyd, a nice, unfinished Musikraft Charvel San Dimas neck, and a Seymour Duncan Screamin' Demon just sitting here...most of the other junk I need just lying around. When I found a '71 quarter, I said to myself, "this would probably the hardest thing to find, so what the hell?"

I've got a strat body to screw up a little bit, and some painting / relicing to do...but that's about it. Should be fun.

Is this project too overdone and played out to cover here? If so I'll just come back and post some pics when it's done.

Not at all!
Show progress, even though Frankies are done alot here, I've seen some pretty impressive ones. And judging by the quality of your work in the past...

go ahead and do it! I made the black and white one out of a cheap johnson strat and i like it more than any other gutiar i have.
#4
I've got one of these neck plates, so this is one area where I will deviate from the original. Playability is more important to me than the accuracy of the neck heel!

#6
I have a few of those..
Make it a JEM style back contour?

That style of neck to body transition looks really good with that type of neck plate, if you know what I'm saying?

Looks good, man.

I stumbled upon this website which has several extremely huge, high res photos of Fender's replica. I figure I'm safe copying that because I can't find pictures of the original that are that large.

I never grow old of watching Frankenstrat replicas, its an iconic guitar, one that inspired many guitarists. I will be watching this closely.

yeah, I used aceshigh16's thread and pics of the fender to make mine. The taping was a bitch....definitely the hardest part. Best pointer I give people...buy good tape...and take your time doing it. Make sure you get every line before you spray a color. Press the tape down good too...so paint doesn't run under it. If you need to move a piece once its been positioned, use a new piece.
#10
Man I made one too, so I think you should go for it. In my thread I said "I know it's overdone but I want one so I'm makin' one". One tip I'm gonna give you is when you spray the red put it on pretty thin. That way the red that's over the black stripes will look darker than the red that's over the white paint. Eddie's has the two shades of red like that. If you put the red on too thick it will make all the red the same shade and it won't look lke Eddie's. I put the red on too heavy on the front of mine but the back has the 2 shades of red. I used aceshigh16's thread as a guide to do mine, too.

If they're done badly or averagely, noone really cares, but every now and then you see one that is just a little bit special. The last one I saw like this was a relic'ed Frankie and it was amazing. So just go for it, but only if you're going to go the extra 5 miles ^^

Just my opinion, of course.

Are you intending to do an accurate "rough" finish?

It would be nice to see a clean version, with candy over silver metallic (red and black candy) and a nice white pearl...with full gloss

Sorry Skeet, but I'm going to do the relic version.

Haven't been taking many pics, but I got it up to VH 1 status today.

Probably gonna give it a week to set up before I start the relicing that needs to be done at this stage.

Oh, and I changed my mind about the contoured heel. I broke out my Strat for a bit and decided that it really didn't bother me that much.
#16
Though this is an overdone and overplayed idea, it will be nice to see one done with your expertise! Needless to say, I'm pretty excited for the way this will turn out.
#17
Yeah, I expected to get a few eyes rolling over this, but I really don't care.

I've wanted that guitar for 25 years. It's about time I had it.

Thanks.

..
I thought the base coat on Frankie's was red?

Either way, you have me wanting one again.

Black first, then white (which gives you the guitar seen on the VH 1 cover), and a little later, the red was added over that.
#20
Nope, white and black first, red was added later.

Probably, but it wouldn't be accurate to the original.

No I painted it black first, then taped it up and painted it white.

With the tape removed, you get the above result. Then I'll tape it up again and paint it red to get this:

#25
Also, I've noticed the red used on the Frankie is slightly opaque, so you can see the lines underneath.
#27
also, about the '71 quarter being the hardest part, it is. its the year that the fewest quarters were produced since WWII

i had to have a friend dig through his entire coin collection to find one....
and i still havent started to build it yet....

Yes, and I actually found a '71 quarter. Convinced me to do the build more than anything.

Eddie had several necks on that guitar, one of them sat higher in the pocket than it should have and he had to raise the bridge to get the action right. So he stuck a quarter under it to keep it level.

I plan on putting the quarter in the "non-functioning" position.
#31
In that picture the quarter isn't even touching the bridge. <.<

With a later neck swap and set up the bridge got moved, so it was no longer resting on the quarter. So in its present state it's pointless, but the guitar just wouldn't look right without it.
