Has it ever crossed anyone elses mind that anyone could be very successful in politics if they were just honest about everything? Surely such a politician would be very popular with the voters and as long as they did their job relatively well they would be unstoppable?

Thoughts Pit?

That's completely illogical. Politics are all about deception and greed.

No.
In fact many systems are set up against people who are both intelligent and honest. As statistics show people who are more intelligent are generally less religious, and stats have also told us that most people won't elect an atheist.

No chance. Every decision in politics is a bad one, no matter how many people are made happy by a certain choice, twice as many are angry because of it. Hence where the lying comes in. If a politician told the whole truth every time, yes, it'd be nice to hear, but nobody would support him after a month.

I am convinced that there are no honest politicians in the US government. No politician does anything that doesn't benefit themselves (or their wallet) in some way.

I know but surely a politician who didn't treat it as such would be very popular. Maybe not with other politicians but if the voters love them then there isn't really much they could do.

Politics, much like wars, are based on the easiest means of getting a large number of people to do what you want them to do. This way is usually deception as it provides a convenient way for both parties to get what they want; a leading group and a following group.

Besides - people don't want honesty. They want excitement and something that looks and/or sounds good as opposed to what's necessary.

The major decisions in government are made by politicians voting, not the public. There probably are one or two honest politicians, they just won't do any good by themselves.

Why would anyone vote for someone who's going to tell the truth?

The people want to hear ridiculous promises as much as the politicians want to tell them.

Politicians rely on the claims that they make to win votes. If they promise to make all the claims and say that they can't, then they don't get votes.

I know its an oxymoron. That was intended.

Did you know that the word politician comes from Greek and roughly translated it means "multiple faces"?

I think most politicians are honest people, but as they get higher in the world of politics they have to tell more and more lies to compete with the lies that other politicians are telling. I don't think any politician, as an individual, has a choice in the matter. Either Lie, or not get votes. If every politician was honest, there would me no need for any of them to lie if they wanted votes. But sadly, that is unrealistic.

tl;dr politicians are honest, but they are forced to lie because it is the only way to stay in office.
