It's pretty funny that your against a Spider III when a Frontman isn't any better.

I'd forget about the FM and get a used tube Amp and run the pedals thru it.
#3
Well how much money do you have?

And you play metal i guess?

Well the Frontman and the metal muff are pretty bad in both their own fields so i think you'd be better off going in another direction.

Edit: I hate my life basically.

Edit 2: I have around $600 dollars USD. I can't buy used and I play mostly alternative like The White Stripes. The Raconteurs, Nirvana, and the Pixies.

For $600 i think you could get some really nice amps that would do those styles VERY well on their own or with a pedal or two.

Sounds like you need a fuzz, first of all [white stripes, raconteurs...]

A nice clean amp with a decent overdrive will get you what you need.

Do you gig?

Edit:
Why can't you buy used?
It would be great if you could....lotsa nice used amps out there.

Since I don't like the Ht5 I won't recommend it.

How about a Blackheart or Vox AC4TV and then run your pedal thru it?
#8
What exactly do you plan to do with this amp? Practice? Play with a band? Record?

The B52 AT112 is a great option at 360$. I'm sure you could do even better with 600$ if you have a better idea of what you're looking for.

The Frontman does have a good clean channel and should take pedals well, you'll just want decent pedals. Looks into the Zvex Box of Rock and MI Audio's Crunch Box if you do want to go that route.

No, but I really would love to.
And a nice clean amplifier with decent overdrive= The Frontman 212.

Amiright?

Not really.

You can get much better cleans and MUCH MUCH MUCH better OD at your price range.

Please consider used?

I'm making a list.

Edit:
B52 is primarily a metal amp....wouldn't be too great here.

Another option is a Superchamp XD, it has an excellent clean channel and takes pedals very well. You can haggle Musicians Friend and get one for $250. That leave you a good amount to buy nice pedals.
#12
My parents have this thing about buying things over the internet, and my local shops really don't have used.

I plan to practice and do some small-medium size gigs with this amplifier.

If the Frontman's OD isn't that great shouldn't it not matter since I am buying distortion pedals?

Will the Superchamp XD be loud enough for small shows and my schools talent show?
#14
The frontman is okay at best for a solid state amp.
The external distortion will just be boosting a mediocre clean into ugly solid state clipping.
Instead of getting that...when eventually you will have to upgrade, who not just get some thing good?

The Superchamp is a good option. It's all tube and has DSP effects i believe.
It would (not sure though) probably take effects well also.
So maybe superchamp with a Fuzz/OD ?

And OD pedal would boost the amp into some very nice sounding distortion.

I still say try the hot rod/blues jr out as well.

Edit:
The frontman is a solid state amplifier.
It uses transistors to amplify your signal.

The hot rod is all tube.
It uses vaccum tubes for amplification.

Tubes (in most cases) have better tonal qualities, have natural sounding overdrive and can be boosted into higher gain territory much better than solid state amps.
Plus, they sound so much better.

Back to the drawing board I guess. I've been looking for the perfect amplifier for awhile and nothing seems to be right. I've tried the Valveking, the Marshall Haze, the Spider Valve and they all came up short.

I plan on going to Guitar Center and Sam Ash tomorrow and try to figure this home. I will not come home empty handed like all of the other times. I will find something that works.

Thanks you guys.

Exactly how do you plan to haggle with an online store?

Every amp need s some tweaking to sound good.

I suggest you wait for more experienced people to suggest things in this thread, then, with a few amps in mind, go to the store, try them out and pick one.

But for now, wait.

The clean channel is great, and the OD is capable good mid-gain rock tones.

Musician's Friend will price match.

OP, if you weren't satisfied with the VK, you won't be satisfied with the Frontman. Save your money some more and check out a Peavey Classic 30.

If you save up alot more, check out a Budda Superdrive 18 or 30.

+1, just becasue its capable of metal alone doesnt mean its primarily a metal amp, it actually has really jazzy cleans that kinda made me want to get it lol
