So, how much attention do you pay to lyrics when you listen to music, and how important are they to you?

Music, to me, has always been about the melody, attitude, energy and emotion. +I love the guitar so thats mainly what I focus on.
I honestly wouldnt be able "sing" the lyrics to my favourite songs cos I just dont pay attention to them that much and dnt know them.
I also listen to lots of instumentals and dnt miss singing at all.

Also when it comes to making music, I love coming up with riffs, solos, progressions, and I love improvising. Coming up with a 'song' and writing lyrics just doesnt appeal to me. Ive never 'written' a song.

Music first lyrics second. If i know any lyrics it's because i've listened to the song so many times they've just stuck. I like writing the lyrics but i find getting a new melody very hard to do, but it's rewarding when you get it right

i pay attention to how theyre sung but not the actual words... ya know?

Depends on the band I think.

I can't tell if a lot of metal songs even have actual lyrics or if the vocalist is just making noise. But it sounds good with the music. In that case I don't think lyrics are very important. The vocals are, but not the lyrics themselves.

But some of my favorite bands like Weezer, Flogging Molly, and Streetlight Manifesto have good lyrics. In that case I do actually pay attention to the lyrics because they are sort of the focus of the song. If you listen to bands like that but don't pay much attention to the lyrics then you are missing most of the point.

A lot. If they're not saying anything, it's not interesting to me.

I agree in every respect... the only bands I care about lyrics/singing are TooL (f***ing intricate lyrics) and Sypmphony X... RUSSELL ALLEN IS THE SH*T... I sing while playing so....

Ever since I started playing the guitar I've been paying more attention to the instruments being played rather than the lyrics.

Lyrics are just as important as the song is, to me. I love poetry and songs with actual meaning, so I can't stand bands that have terrible or meaningless lyrics.

You should probably mug John Frusciante or Ritchie Blackmore. They're small guys, we could take 'em.

Just look out for that other guy in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Will Farrel. He's a tall mofo, got a long reach.

this.
For me, if I know the lyrics to a song, like someone above said, it's because I've listened to the song hundreds of times and i know literally every aspect of the song.
That being said, the only band's lyrics i know really really well is Say Anything
If man is 5, if man is 5, if man is 5,
then the Devil is 6, then the Devil is 6, then the Devil is 6, the Devil is 6,
And if the Devil is 6,

then God is 7, then God is 7, then God is 7

Agreed.

I usually go for bands that play well and have good lyrics. The one exception that stands out the most to me is Breaking Benjamin. They're all great musicians and if I could have one voice, it'd be Ben's. But god damn some of the lines in their songs are completely unrelated to the next one.

I think a band should at least make an attempt at writing good lyrics. Saying that lyrics are absolutely pointless is just stupid.

I love metal. Metal doesn't have to have bad lyrics. A lot of metal bands have brilliant lyrics as well as instruments and vocals. To me, every part of every song is just as important as the other parts. I can't stand people who think that the guitar is the only part that matters.
#25
If a band has deemed it fit to put vocals in their tracks then they need to be good. If I can't get anything out of the lyrics then I find it really hard to connect with a band's music.

Ok, I was generalising, I just think lots of metal bands have shi* lyrics and a lot of the time you cant understand them cos the singer screams/growls.

I listen to vocals like another instrument, I rarely pick up the meaning of lyrics when I listen to songs. That being said, I write lyrics myself. Hmm, weird combination I guess.
#29
I think it depends on the song/band. some bands, the lyrics are passable as long as the emotion is still there. the lyrics don't have to be interesting or even good if the melody and overall feel of the song meshes well together.

but that said, the lyrics can enhance the feel of the song. radiohead does a great job of that. they'll have some melancholy progressions and such and the vocal melody will be suitably haunting and when you actually listen to the lyrics, it enhances it even further.
#30
Depends on the band.
If it's Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Umphrey's McGee, then I normally won't pay attention to them. However, bands and artists like Fleet Foxes, Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, and other bands like that get my full attention when it comes to listening to the lyrics.
I can honestly say I have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.

Depends on how good the lyrics are, and how much the particular type of music focuses on lyrics. EG. Grime focuses on lyrical content, dance doesn't.

I pay attention to all the aspects of a song, because I can't enjoy it properly until I hear everything and understand everything that's going on in that song.

I like to pay attention to the lyrics as well because I'm a bit of a singer as well as a guitarist.

It all depends. If I'm listening to Dokken, I'm paying attention to lynch, not the singer....don't even know his name.

Lots of grunge and early punk, its the lyrics.
#35
A lot, the lyrics can add or detract a lot from the over all emotion of the song.

Lyrics mean everything to me. I definately pay attention to them and in my opinion they are one of the most important aspects of any song.

This exactly. Most metal music I listen to is more to the extreme end so I can't really understand the vocals.
