So, I just figured out the modes of theory, and I'm making myself a study guide basically. And I come to the question .. . . which note is this?

Ok, so I'm in the key of C doing Ionian. C is obvious the root note, but is that considered my first note? Like is it just not counted, or do I count that as one? For example:

Ionian : WWHWWWH
Would C be my first W, I don't think it would but I'm not sure.

Wouldn't it be

D E F G A B C?

Making D the first note?

No, first note is C. C-D-E-F-G-A-B

Quite right

Your on the right track TS with note displacement but the Ionian mode is basically the root major scale, it is only from the Dorian mode that we begin to move the notes sideways (in that case the starting note would be B.)

WWHWWWH refers to the intervals between each of the notes, so
C (W) D (W) E (H) F (W) G (W) A (W) B (H) C

The interval between C and D would be your first W (whole tone).
