Simply.. how?!

I'm having trouble keeping it independent, are there any exercises I can do that'll help? I've been trying to tap one foot 4/4 and the other foot eighths

I'm trying to learn Hey Hey by Big Bill Broonzey (most will recognise it as Clapton's cover on his unplugged album)

Let me tell you about heartache and the loss of god
Wandering, wandering in hopeless night
Out here in the perimeter there are no stars

Out here we is stoned
Immaculate.

How fast are you taking the song?

Just do it as slow as you need to in order to get the right notes down. Slowly take it up a notch each time until you mess up. Slow down to your original speed and repeat.
