I'm going to GC tomorrow, with the plan to buy a new/used guitar. I am looking for a more radical shape, like Vs, stars, and explorers, as I have gotten tired with strat-style guitars.

My main influences are Motley Crue, Megadeth, Skid Row, Iron Maiden (More Paul era than Bruce), and Metallica. I will be playing through a B52 AT112 for gigging once I get to that (which should be soon) and a Peavey Vypyr for bedroom practice.
I already plan on looking at:

Dean VMNT
LTD V-401
Jackson King V
Jackson Rhoads

Specs I want:

FR or hard tail (preferably string thru), NOT vintage/bigsby trems
Humbucker in bridge
Good distortion, decent or better cleans
At least 22 frets, preferably 24

Also I am not going to get a gibson style V, they look terrible IMO.

So what ones should I play?
Carvin Tele (11/21/11 )
Epi Sheraton II
Agile AL3100
Fender MIM Strat
Squier Vintage Modified Tele
Epiphone something or other acoustic

Out of those the King V and the VMNT are the best

For $500 you might not be able to get all that much, but if you want a Jackson and V isn't really your thing (You don't like the feel or whatever) try an Explorer, they fit that nice and they're comfortable to play.

Although I'm definitely a V guy.

Thanks.

Any other ones I should try out?

I'm also looking through the used ones, so that's definitely part of the plan.

I don't like the Jackson Warrior's shape but the guitar has some sweet specs

Used is definitely your best bet if your prefer substance over style.

Some may be beat up, but they scream like a banshee.

Warrior or Xiphos if they have them
Also, if they sell ESP see if they have a Gus G model or Roope Latvala model there, theyre stars but ESP instead of Charvel/Jackson
I play Lacrosse, you should too

I forgot about that one; I'll definitely check that out. I actually don't mind it, but the guitar it replaced, the Kelly Star, looked way better

How about the Schecter V1? Assuming you have an amp that likes active pickups. And personally, I wouldn't go with the Dean V because its f**king huge. Tone? Pretty good. But riffs are a total bitch to play on it unless you're standing up. But that's just me.

The Schecter V looks similar to Gibson style Vs with the rounded edges, and I don't like the way that looks. It might look different in person, though, so I'll try it out. I usually play standing, and I'll probably use my strat if I'm sitting, so the size shouldn't be a problem with the dean.

Beware the Schecter V's though. They're brutal, but there is neck dive due to the lower horn being longer.

Try any jackson x series.

I agree- anything in the Jackson X series will give you a high quality instrument for the money. Try the RR, King V, Kelly or Warrior in the series- they all have similar wide and thin necks

I don't remember a Kelly in the X series of guitars. I would have got one then :P

The X Series of guitars are great, except for the pickups. Change them out and the guitar will be great.

Whoops- meant the KE3

and here are the guitars in the X-series-

Dimebag is right about the pups- unfortunately they aren't the same quality as the rest of the guitar- they are passable, but you can easily swap em out for real Duncans or maybe some active EMGs
