Tascam Portastudio MKII's are good, theyre discontinued and tape recorders tho .. guessing you wouldnt want one tho... get a Audio interface and acouple of mics and download Audacity/Reaper/Kristal

i was leaning more towards something portable like the zoom mrs 8 or boss br600 so i can take it to the drummers house and record drum tracks

well i had the br-600 and for what it is its pretty good. the built in mics are actually pretty decent and will give an ok sound for drums. the onboard effects arent bad, so you can use them for guitar and bass. personnally i think its the best you can get for portability and quality. 8 tracks is VERY misleading as 5/6, and 7/8 are combines. you also need 7/8 for mastering the final track, which leaves you with 5 tracks. pretty limiting.

http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fostex-MR8HD-8Track-Digital-Recorder-with-40GB-Hard-Drive?sku=240341 this might be a bit better as it has 4 mic inputs which im sure you could get a decent drum sound by getting 4 mikes for drums. those would be my two recommadations.

the drums are electric ones, so we will only need 1 line out from the drum amp

http://www.zzounds.com/item--ZOMHD8CD this would actually be your best bet as the br-600 is just way to cramped. this is maybe 50$ more and you get more tracks and two mic preamps (youll want one for a vocal mic)a cd burner, and you can upload the files onto your comp and use it as kind of a mixer (i dont know if it comes with software) anyways id recommend this.

that zoom looks pretty good but is a little more than i was looking to spend,
