Hey there GB&C.

After a while of planning out my build and ordering parts/finding a place to do the work, I'm finally starting my build.

As the title states, I'm building a guitar and incorporating a stop sign.

How you ask? well the guitar itself will be shaped like an octagon with the stop sign acting as a sort of pickguard that covers the entire body.

All major work will be done on Tuesdays and Thursday as that is when I have access to the power tools.

Specs:
-Squier Neck (it is a great neck and it was free)
-25.5"scale
-Black Gotoh Hardtail Bridge
-2 GFS Lil Killer SC sized Humbuckers (10k and 15k)
-12" Stop Sign
-Walnut Body
-Killswitch, 3 way, and 1 concentric pot for both volumes.

Pics coming soon.

a normal guitar shape with the stop sign cut into a half covering pickguard would look far less cheesy.

If you are making it the way that I am imagining it then it will be awesome!

Like a banjo right? But with a stop sign?

pretty much, I was even thinking of using as a banjo case for it if i could find one that would fit.

also, I realize the tackiness factor.

I can't afford a headless bridge right now. But in the future: maybe.

I am however reshaping the headstock to be more Ibanez like, and painting it red.

Now the questions:

Does anyone know how to ground the top pot of a concentric if you're using them both as volume controls?

And any opinions on what area of the wood I should cut from? (the front of the quitar will have the sign over it, but the back will be either natural or transparent red)
The sign probably takes up about 2/3 of the wood, so just say whichever part of the rain you find prettiest.

You could write Don't and Believing on top and bottom to make it look cooler. I don't know all that much, but I would use the top picture of the wood as the bottom of the guitar. The second one looks a little cracked on the bottom, but you probably don't need to use that part since there's enough wood.

The left part of the bottom picture looks like it's the best for the part of the guitar where the wood is showing, it doesn't have the weird design that's more to the right of it.
There be no shelter here.

^so do I only have to ground once? because both sections of the pot have three lugs as usual. Sorry, I've never used a concentric before.

Yeah, just ground it once. You will still need to run the certain lugs to ground on both of them though.

if i use this diagram (couldn't figure out how to show that I'm using concentric in the diagram)

Since I can't ground the third lug to the bottom like a standard pot, should I ground it to the side, or run a wire to the bottom?

Man, I thought about doing this for a while.
The tackiness factor drove me away, so more power to you! Good luck on your build.

Thanks man, the $30 bet with my friend saying i wouldn't/couldn't do it helped a little too

thats enough to cover my wood and the 3 way.

would you believe my pot and knob cost more than my wood?

I wish I lived in a country with wood...

On topic, this is looking...interesting. Seems more like a 6 string, electric banjo than a guitar, though.

Yep, aluminum + vinyl.

I have no idea whatsoever what the tonal properties are.

Lets see...aluminum is a pretty resonant metal, so sustain shouldn't be too bad. Something tells me that it should have a lot of treble as well, but I have nothing to back that up.

I don't know about vinyl, it doesn't seem very resonant, though.

That's not a real stop sign is it? They're much bigger than that, I've got one on my wall.

EDIT: Not saying it won't be cool, I just can't tell if you're a giant or not.

What brand of guitar is that? I have a semi-hollow that has the same neck and same hardware. I gotta figure out the correct brand name for it.

@Will, normal stop signs are 18", this one is 12"

@Jim, I can't remember, I believe I got the picture off of the guitarz blog though.

Also, just cut the rough octagonal shape into the wood, sanding and routing will be done soon.

Updates on Saturday methinks?

if the stop sign is one that you actually just take down from a sign, its gonna be a really really heavy guitar. those signs dont look to big but they would be massive as a guitar

edit: 12 inches is still kinda bulky, also the guitar will prolly be uncomfortable sitting down.

how did you cut the body?
You need to have the grain running parallel with the neck, and with the dimensions of that piece of wood it looks like you would have had to cut it so that the grain is 90 degrees to the neck...

As far as attaching the sign goes, I'll be putting a screw in each of the 8 corners, so it will act sort of like one huge pickguard.

As far as the size goes, the width is a little bit over what a strat would be at it's widest point, length wise however, it is very small. Just by resting the body on my leg, yes, it is a bit uncomfortable, so I may consider doing a tummy cut on it.

I totally skipped over your post cam, sorry, its 4:30 and I can't fall asleep!

I did cut the body so the grain would be parallel to the neck, looks can be deceiving because the wood was *almost* enough room to cut two of the bodies.

It wouldn't really have matter until i route the cavities anyway because the body is symmetrical horizontally and vertically (as well as diagonally)
