What is the sort of "hidden gem" (e.g. RG550 for the RG-series) of the Ibanez S-series? The kind of guitar that has nice parts and nice build quality, but isn't all that expensive simply for the fact that it's old.

depends on the model within the series, both series produced have prestige modules and all models have various hardware differences

and a weak barometer would be satch`s model is based on a s-series and vai on a rg,

Satch's model was based on the discontinued Radius series. For the S series, I say the S470.

Why does everyone dig the S470 so much?

It's a current production model and Ibanez is slacking on the S-series these days...

No love for the S540?

the s540 are very good guitars especially when you change the pick ups.

or a s9870 if you can find one

Well when it comes to older ones, I believe you want a 5xx series or higher, because back then anything with a lower number had a POS trem on it. Nowadays even the s320s seem to be a great deal because they come stock with the ZR which really kicks ass.
