I'm about to start a plan on my own name with a new phone, so I've been studying up a lot on my options. Cell phones, smartphones especially, are getting pretty advanced. I think it's safe to say we may be missing out on a lot of Utopian visions people had of our era in the past (flying cars, transporters), but we've surpassed the levels of advancements that people may have imagined in the area of hand held devices. Even ten years ago I doubt that people would have believed we'd have cell phones that can do all they do now.

So what's the next area of innovation going to be? So far we've gone from text messaging to web browsing, to GPS navigation and unlimited multimedia capabilities. I personally wouldn't be surprised to see a mobile (very basic) hologram feature within five or ten years.
We're only strays.

My cellphone has the numbers 0-9 on it. On a good day I can catch some reception to speak with somebody. Life is good.

I would rather tie myself to an electrical fence with a steel cable then listen to that woman pronounce the letter S.

On the topic, everyone knows cell phones are a worldwide conspiracy so that the government can know where everyone is at any given time

That was acutally really cool, but its too bulky. They'll have to make the technology smaller if they want to market it at all. However, this is the future. I'd say somewhere in the future, they'll plant phones in our brains and all we'll have to do is think of who to call and it will dial them up.

putting gps in phones is the best way for big brother to try and fcuk you. get one without gps

There will be a bluetooth earpiece.....and that's it. They won't need a phone to be connected to. The earpiece will be the phone, entirely voice activated with a little transparent eye adapter so you can actually see who you're talking to. It will also surround you with a force field that repels all of those evil microwaves that they were b***in about way back when.
Some people just wanna watch the world burn. Wanna join me when I take my turn to pour the gas, light the match, see your world flip upside down and drop until it's inside out?

Not just in cell phone technology, but all fields that deal with transmission or storage of data - Bandwidth, phones, computers. The sky's the limit.

And to recap the thread so far, the Pit wants a phone that can shoot bees, fly, and jerk you off.

I like it.

And I definitely believe that probably even before this century is halfway through, we'll have started an evolutionary development into a cyborg species. That sounds way out there, but just think about it.

Still, I'm just glad we now have address books in all mobile phones so that a name actually comes up on screen and I can finally find out who was phone.

pretty sure there are smartphones with software that can telnet to a PC and do stuff, as well there are all kinds of gadgets that can control your lights/appliances from said computer

...not sure about toilet though...what would you want it to do while you were away from it?

I went to a summer camp at the University of Michigan and one of the guys from asia had a phone with a webcam. That'll probably be the most immidiate devolpment to hit the west in cell phone technology.

Scientists have already connected rats' brains to computers to run flight simulators. All they really have to do is find a way to place a small computer in our bodies and link it to our brains, without killing us.

My fear is that life would be like Ghost in the Shell. People would opt to be cyborgs, but because the computers interact with our senses and memory, all of it can be altered by outside sources (hackers).

I cant remember which cell maker does it, but one company is making a cell phone that doesnt require a wall charger. It receives power through transmitted microwaves and always has a full charge. Its pretty awesome.

I also saw a couple of days ago a things thats implanted under your skin that has a blue tooth chip in it. It doesnt show up at all under your skin until you have an incoming call and then it pops up with a caller ID on it. Its like some tattoo thing and it was actually pretty cool.

Yeah but im getting at a phone that is the only controller you need. Its probably possible right now, just Id like it to be commercialised. EG Id like to be able to hold one device I can make calls on, take pics with, control the tv, set the time on the microwave, flick on the lights, turn on the alarm system and watch pr0n on.

all of that is easily possible with todays technology, the problem is interfacing it all together. If you wrote the right software for an iPhone or an Android phone and had bluetooth receivers integrated into the other devices (TV, microwave, light switch, etc) it could easily be done.
